School text needed for school. Came promptly for start of class. Came as described.

This book is a simple introduction for ancient egyptian hsitory. It is well organised and tells you just about everything that you need to wet your apetite of egyptian history. It is very general but well documented.

Receiving it earlier than expected adds more stars. The reading was very interesting, would definitely recommend it to many others if they have an essay to write.

The book is very vague and lacks any real sustenance in any particular topic. This book is a fair starting point for the beginning Egyptian enthusiast but is not for the serious Egyptian researcher.

This book, whose chapters are organized topically, presents important aspects of ancient Egypt. It covers the history, cities, government, geography, language, beliefs, art, architecture, tombs, religion, monotheism, gods, society, marriage, entertainment, dress, jewelry and the Nile river. The authors also discuss the ancient Egyptians' beliefs in life and their conception of death. Common archaeological and Egyptological terms are explained in the glossary. An excellent bibliography is included. A recommended well-written book, it is most useful for those who know little, if nothing, of this civilization and its people.

This is a wonderful overview of Egyptian history and culture. The authors are very good at moving through broad patterns of reasoning, making great internal connections and contrasts with the information that they present. They also do a great job of comparing Egypt to other ancient cultures. It's hard to demonstrate just how clear and insightful the essays are, but, trust me, this introduction, though fairly devoid of pictures, has a lot to offer.

everything that francesca jourdan said about this book is true, it does have alot of info. the only thing i did not like about this book is that it is written is school book form. it is hard to get into this book, but once you do you find out it is very informative.

school book - does the job.

About the Author

Bertolt Bertolt (1898-1956) was the most influential German dramatist and theoretician of the theater in the 20th century. Also a poet of formidable gifts and considerable output, Brecht first attracted attention in the Berlin of the 1920s as the author of provocative plays that challenged the tenets of traditional theater. Forced to flee Germany in 1933 because of his leftist political beliefs and opposition to the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler, Brecht and his family spent 14 years in exile in Scandinavia and the United States. Although he tried hard to become established in the United States, Brecht failed to make a breakthrough either as a scriptwriter in Hollywood, California, or as a playwright on Broadway. Two years later he moved to East Berlin and remained there until his death. In the 1950s he became an internationally acclaimed playwright and director through productions of his plays by the Berliner Ensemble, a company based in East Berlin and headed by his wife, actor Helene Weigel. John Willett (1917-2002) was a noted scholar, author and translator. From the outset he was the prime editor and translator (with Ralph Manheim and others) behind Brecht in English. He was involved in the planning and translation of the programme book for the Berliner Ensemble's celebrated first visit to London in 1956 (the year of Brecht's own death); in 1959 he published the first general study in any language, The Theatre of Bertolt Brecht; he translated, edited and introduced the enormously influential Brecht on Theatre (1964); and he was a founding member of the International Brecht Society and sometime editor of its Yearbook.

Pretty much everything that Brecht wrote on the theatre, his own, the theatre world around him, and the plays and dramatic theories of others. Anyone researching matters of Brechtian theatre according to BB need go to no other source. Especially interesting are the insights one might glean out by Brecht on how his rather idiosyncratic and ever-evolving ideas of the stage might be fitted into Stalinist socialism that he embraced.

First of all, it should be mentioned that there is no theatre untouched by Bertolt Brecht's theories and practices on theatre. In the 21st century, the way we look at theatre has its roots in Brecht's Aesthetic. Now, this book is like the Brecht Bible essentially. Packed with all his views and opinions on the theatre, society and culture around theatre, acting, etc. Its big, dense and the type set is small enough to make you cry sometimes because he just never seems to stop.I had a hard time following and understanding it, but that is no fault of this edition, but more so the long winded thoughts of Brecht. The core of his ideas and points are there, they just need to be searched for. Sometimes he makes it very clear what point he is trying to make, but sometimes you have to wade through his thoughts until he nails it for you. I think for having never read it before, I wasn't sure what was the most important part of some of the arguments he was making, but overall I know this is a valuable book to own. I think it requires guidance from someone who has studied Brecht a lot, which I fortunately had. There is a Brecht for Beginners I think out there that is a GOOD COMPANION to this book.

Good collection of Brecht's views on theater theory.

This is a huge selection of essays written over many years. This not necessarily something you may want to just sit down and read straight through. If you do, you will find many contradictions over the years. At any rate, it is a very formative collection of Brecht's work, and certainly a must have for anyone who studies theatre or the arts in general.

Great for quotes by Brecht, and for understanding his version of absurdism, though ther are some strange "interviews" that don't accurately quote him, but thry are entertaining.

This is an insightful text explaining Brecht's views on theater through essays and notes. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about Epic Theatre.

Great book. Brecht is a good writer with intelligent ideas.

Excellent book. Great notes and edition.

Stripped of ridiculous stereotype, this book takes a knowledgeable, insightful look at one of the fastest-growing religious communities in America. Multi-racial, multi-ethnic, immigrant and native-born, Muslims have been tremendously successful in America. For the rest of the century they will face challenges that followed them here from their native countries. Abdo is a terrific reporter, and has covered Islamic societies around the world. Here she turns her sharp and perceptive eye on her own country.

It is seldom seen that a non-muslim has to say anything positive about muslims, specially in the Unites States. Lot of credit goes to Ms. Abdo for her fair and balanced view of Muslim life in America. Americans really need to open up their hearts and minds about muslims and stop judging through a tainted glass of hate and right wing brain washing. Don't judge the whole muslim "umma" due to the actions of 0.000001 %fanatics who think they are doing it in the name of religion. The only complaint I have is that she didn't discuss much about muslims in America from the Indo-Pak sub continent, as they make up a substantial number in this country.

While this book does offer an interesting look into the Muslim community in Chicago, especially the generational divide, this book should *not* be considered comprehensive. It is, at best, a very introductory look into the Muslim communities within the USA. Ms. Abdo focuses solely on the Chicago Muslim community at the exclusion of the many varied Muslim communities throughout the United States.Case in point: African American Muslims. When I began the book, I thought that Ms. Abdo was biased against African American Muslims. She portrays them as backward, unorthodox heretics that have little to offer to the wider ummah. I later realized that this is actually a by-product of her very poor sample; as someone who works with the West Philadelphia Muslim community, I can tell a prospective reader that not all black Muslims in America are throwbacks to the Nation of Islam, though Ms. Abdo would have you believe this. She devotes a chapter to the Latino Muslim Community (about 75k people) at the direct exclusion of the Black Muslim community, and explains why: "Despite the far greater number of African American converts [to Islam], I have chosen to write about the conversions of Latinos. I think the reasons they are converting - their attraction to the intellectual nature of Islam and their disillusionment with religions they feel are guided by blind faith - reflect powerful global trends that will continue, even accelerate, in the foreseeable future. African Americans, on the other hand, have converted for reasons that are particular to their history in America, often as recourse against their discrimination at the hands of white society" (176). Ms. Abdo apparently sees the Latino community as more intellectually inclined in terms of religion. She justifies this by saying that black converts begin their conversion process in prison, but does not mention that black *males* are incarcerated at an incredibly high rate, usually because of a lack of opportunity and education. Black females are also converts, but they are not mentioned in the chapter on feminist Islam. I find this statement and others slightly disturbing. The beauty of Islam is how it can adapt to its surroundings, both in praxis and in substance, especially over wide geographical divides. One need look no further than Muslims on the fringes (Berber, Malaysian or Chinese Muslims, for example) to see examples of this. Ms. Abdo would have benefited from putting more effort into her examination of American Muslims in all their manifestations, white or black, rich or poor. The fact that this book passes itself off as a layman's guide to Muslim life in the United States excuses the lack of detail, but only to an extent; simultaneously, a layman would not understand the great diversity of Islam within the United States. Go elsewhere if you're looking for that.

This inspiring, edge of your seat book is both refreshing and welcoming to both Muslim and non-Muslim. This is a review of an American convert who has been spending his Muslim life going from place to place trying to learn traditional Islam from some of the most authoritive figures and opinions that are accessible from the English medium. Also this opinion comes from a patriotic American who cares for the security and concerns of America like any other American has proudly served in the beginnings of the War against Terrorism. That being said I would like to say that this book surprised me at every level. She uses the opinions of some of the best well trained scholars in the US today whose influence to Muslims in America and abroad are increasing day by day. Scholars like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Shaykh Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Umar Faruq Abdullah, Shaykh Muhammad Yaqoobi, and Sulyman Nyang (many whom I have had the honor to hear them speak and shake their hands). Their message of peace and tolerance is taking the minds of Muslims and bringing them back to what Islam was for 1400 years. It is totally uprooting the intolerant views that men from Saudi Arabia have been trying to instill into unsuspecting new Muslim immigrants. Geneive does not mention what this means bluntly because her objectivity is trying to be welcoming to all Muslims but basically what this means to Americans is that there is a civil mind war in Islam and the good guys are winning. All the groups that seem anti-American and intolerant are getting kicked out and being replaced with an Islam that tolerates American culture and seeks to live and thrive in harmony with them. I think that this is something American journalists like Geneive Abdo tries to show. To the other majority of journalist, because it lacks the sensationalism of the extremist Islam that they want to create for their audience, does not cover this. But I do my best to inform Americans of this, especially our military. My military friends tell me how their friends in intelligence are being more aware of who the good guys and bad guys in Islam are. They know the names and ideas of these groups in a more sophisticated fashion and not just looking at the old method of stereotypical long bearded man and scarf lady which basically has no foundation. I think Genieve's book somewhat paints this internal struggle at the end of the book. Also a side note: It's important to mention that these groups that are intolerant and distasteful have only been around for 50-100 years. McCarthy-like journalists try to make it seem as if they have been around throughout Islamic history. A good analysis of this topic is "Islam Fundamentalism and the Betrayal of Tradition" by Joseph Lumbard, a book that I have freely given to professors and soldiers alike. Now the other point I love about this book is the hopes, dreams, and fears of the Muslims living in America and how they are fully American and should be shown to Americans everywhere. There are stories about women rebelling against oppressive un-Islamic customs of their cultures that is both heart warming for Americans and Muslims alike. There are also stories of heroic Muslims trying to show the loving side of Islam: what Muslims cherish despite the efforts of extremist and over-zealous "patriotic Americans" to try and keep them silenced. Another part I like is the internal woman's movements and how westerners improperly try to portray it and what the reality really is for Muslims. Geneive is not telling Muslims how they feel but conveying it. I could go on and on about the virtues of this book but I do not want to ruin it for everyone. I am sure there are Muslims that might not like it because they suspect every non-Muslim with bad intentions and I am sure there are Americans who won't like this book because it doesn't buy into their idea of how Islam should be. About the Muslim beliefs and practices, she does a good job showing the perspective of what Islam has been for 1400 years and how the majority of Muslims view it world wide rather then just how the majority of Muslims view it in America. Some Muslims in America make the religion a free for all interpretation because that's what was first conveyed to them. This is incorrect as there are legitimate scholarly principles to each discipline of learning that once you master, you might be authorized to teach. That being said, one mistake I found in the book was that Geneive portrays Sunni Islam without hierarchy. There is a hierarchy in Islam but it is through knowledge not power. The most knowledgeable and pious a person is his opinion is taken as more of an authority on an Islamic discpline than the lesser. Without structure and hierarchy, religion can be in the hands of the ignorant that can lead to the extreme zealotry or the extreme liberal who waters down a religion until it becomes meaningless. This mistake I forgive because most Muslims I come across aren't even aware of this either. Overall this is a good and authoritive book for any one wanting to learn about their Muslim neighbor. I myself and many others who would like to convey that such a topic couldn't have had a better job done on it.-Chris

I’ve always been fascinated by Roman history. Over the years I have wanted to understand how this great empire came to be and ended. In researching these books online it goes without saying that I wanted one that was an easy read so to speak. Also, just as important was a book that kept the reader interested, and wanting to keep reading from one chapter to the next. I found this book and ordered it after reading some of the reviews. I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a well written account and I believe anyone interested in the subject matter would like very much. I highly recommend this book.

I am a post-graduate student who is writing his thesis on Marcus Aurelius (He was one of the so called 5 Good Emperors). Anyway needless to say I have studied the Roman Empire extensivly. I read this book, because it was recomended to me by a fellow student. I was not going to read it, as it is a broad overview of a civilization that can hardly be expected to adequately fit into roughly 400 pages. To me it seemed a survey book for those wishing to get a general grasp of the time period, however curiosity got the better of me and I decided to read the book to see this authors take on the subject. Being a survey book I could see no other reason to read it. I was pleasantly suprised. I found the book to read like a novel. Overall the author nails the mood of the time period and inserts the facts needed for an introduction to what Ancient Rome was, where it came from, how it evolved, and the seeds of its undoing. I also enjoyed the period pieces that the author chose to write about, because to fit every major event in Rome's history into 400 pages would be impossible!Overall I found this book to be an excellent starting point for anyone wishing to learn about Ancient Rome, its culture, politics, military, and what Rome's accomplishments have meant to western civilization.

Good book for my first on Roman Empire history. We are going to Italy this fall and I wanted some appreciation of the Roman Empire. I have done a lot of reading on Greek history but not so much on the history of the Romans. I think I will try and buy the companion DVD series others have mentioned. The book concentrates on approximately 7 turning points in Roman history and the personalities who mattered the most. I think the chapter I enjoyed the most was the one on the Jewish rebellion. With this as a background I think I'm ready to tackle works of Josephus.I think you will enjoy this book, if you are like me and a relative novice on Roman history, give it a try.

If you're looking for a nonfictional book of ancient Rome that successfully captures the history in a way that is intriguing and colorful and goes deeper than your typical bland and colorless encyclopedia types then I'm sorry to say this book isn't the one. I think my issue with this book was that although it presented the pivotal events in Rome's history in an efficient and moderately interesting way, it suffered due to the author's perpetual campaigning to show ancient Rome's political and social issues and how they mirror our current political system. The motivations behind the book aren't derived from an artistic attempt to portray Rome's intriguing and most iconic figures or the heated atmosphere of climactic events. Rather the motivations come from the author's interest in social issues. For example, there are more pages dedicated to Tiberius Gracchus and his reforming crusade than the entire 200 years of amazing events that preceded him including the Punic Wars and Hannibal's conquest. Those motivations also explain the author's disapproval of his subject; Ancient Rome. It was frustrating to read the frequent comments he made that stressed Rome's disingenuous actions whenever he possibly could. Writers so often become the moral police of history. How can a historian truly discover an intriguing concept from Roman history if he's more concerned with showing readers the immorality of Rome's rise to power. I think most people who are looking for a book on ancient Rome are intrigued by it and are hoping to find a source that can help them better understand that which intrigues them and experience something below the surface. However, it's rare to find a historian that can be an artist as well. I originally gave the book 3 stars because at least it gave a basic history of Rome's rise and fall in a "page-turning" way, but the more I read the more I felt like the author was trying to persuade me on current politics rather than Ancient Rome. If anybody knows of a captivating book on Ancient Rome and I don't mean the colossus style book of Gibbon leave a comment.

I was some ways into this book when I began to think that this thing read like one of those not too serious documentaries on the History channel. Of course that's in fact what it is. I bought the book mainly because I enjoy Mary Beard's writing and figured she would not endorse and write the introduction for something of questionable quality. Indeed, this is a very successful gloss of the high (read dramatic) points of Roman history. I found the writing pedestrian and a little dull, while still being very readable. If you are curious about Roman history, you can't go too wrong with this book, just know that it's sort of like reading a history of America skipping about to just the cool bits. "George Washington becomes president, now off to Abraham Lincoln!" as thought nothing happened in between or to anyone who was not at the top of the heap.My favorite overview of Roman history is neither a book nor documentary. Check out the Great Courses lectures on Roman history - either buy them or they are often available from your library. The lectures are interesting and the professor engaging. Best of all you can listen to them on your commute or next long trip.

Torture Mom was extremely difficult to read, certainly not for anyone looking for a book that's lighthearted or inspirational. The actions and words of the "mom" in this true story are beyond disturbing. Her treatment of these two young girls, lashing out, encouraging others to abuse and mistreat them was and is absolutely deplorable. Her parenting of all the children, her own and the neighbor kids was disgusting. Equally deplorable is that nobody stepped in, noone made even the smallest attempt to save them from this monsterous woman and her loyal followers. I was truly hoping someone, anyone would make an effort to save Jenny and Sylvia before it was too late. And, tragically, help came too late for one of them. It's a heartbreaking story and one that should move people to take action so horrid events never happen to a child. I was appalled that Gert wasn't more harshly punished. She's totally underserving of being referred to as "mom" or "mother".

As a young girl living in Indiana I can remember my mom talking about this case. I can also remember how angry my mom was when she was granted parole. After reading this I can understand why mom was so cautious about allowing my siblings and I to go to houses of people she didn't know. Such a sad and terrifying story. I loved and hated reading it at the same time.

The history of this case was very well researched. This book is not for the heavily empathic, though. Mr. Green goes very deeply into the mind of the victim, and what is believed to be what she experienced in her final weeks of life. You have been warned! I was crying in pain by the time I had finished reading.

I'm a true crime junkie and this just may be the most disturbing book I have ever read. This is the true story of a teenager who was brutally tortured and humiliated for 3 months in what is possibly the most heinous crime I have ever read about. This author leaves nothing to the imagination and I had to pause reading many times as the true meaning of the words hit me. Tears came to my eyes often and my stomach clenched even more. This book will stay with me for a very long time as I try to reconcile the world I know with the utter depravity that surrounded this girl. With this being said you may ask why I would recommend it, it's because I feel this girl deserves the world to know what happened to her.

At first I didn’t know if I was going to like this book. This was like watching a movie and thinking it’s boring, but when you watch awhile you can’t take your eyes off it.You would think it is fitch. How could one human be so cruel. And all those around and participated in this, is just so hard to believe.I truly didn’t want to stop reading it. I have loved true crime books and read a lotBut this one really touched me.

This was the most stomach churning book I've ever read! How any one person could inflict such horrors on another human being is mind boggling; let alone influence many others to participate! Not one of the perpetrators got anywhere near the punishment they deserved!

The depravity of people always amazes me. How anyone could do that to another person and a child is beyond my comprehension. Ryan Green is an incredible writer. You can picture the events. It was chilling.

This true crime book was disturbing to say the least. There is really no definite reason given for the abuse and torture of this young girl who is left in the "care" of Gert. Some o f the abuse is graphic so only read this if you have a strong stomach.

Not so HOT!!

I read this book as a precursor to a lecture I was giving to a group of undergraduate architecture students on 'design thinking'. At this point you may be asking yourself, "what is design thinking"? Exactly. My understanding had more to do with how we identify and balance the multitude of issues that surround any architectural or urban design problem. I see it as our ability to distill from all the forces and influences on a site, the project's essence. Rowe sees it in a slightly different manner; a very scientific one. Which in this publication, for me at least, made for a somewhat dry read. There are stretches of scientific analysis of human problem solving skills that I imagine many will find fascinating. However, as an architect I was interested in understanding in a more tangible way, what informs our intuitive decisions related to site, place, space, movement, program, structure, etc.Additionally, I would have liked to see the design and thought processes of the three initial case studies investigated more thoroughly. They were largely abandoned after their introduction with just a few references back to those examples in the text. The writing can be a bit verbose at times and when blended with the frequent scientific jargon, a bit taxing. At times the book appears to be collecting and synthesizing all critical writing completed on the topic over the last century, frequently quoting and referencing other works. This is a serious read and if you approach it with the right mindset, you will find some real gems and well constructed thoughts.

I am an architecture student and this book was assigned in my studio class. Although the reading can be difficult to follow, it is highly informative about the design process and challenges you to do further research to expand your knowledge. If you are buying this, don't be afraid to take that extra step while reading. Knowledge is power, Are you up to the challenge?
