Precious Little Sleep: The Complete Baby Sleep Guide for Modern Parents, by Alexis Dubief

Review

Dubief's book is as no-nonsense yet funny and compassionate as the blog that led to it. It's the most thorough book on baby sleep out there that relies heavily on the evidence, doesn't force advice on parents or patronize them, and, above all, doesn't pile on the guilt. Dubief speaks with an authority borne of experience and relying heavily on the most current scientific research -- without the bias of cherrypicking studies found in so many other baby sleep books. With super-short, digestible sections and lists galore, the book is specially formatted for the reduced cognitive abilities of the most sleep-deprived zombie-parents. And since almost no new parent can read a book cover-to-cover, a quick guide even suggests what to read first based on the reader's situation. Dubief's anecdotes reassure parents that they're not alone but that hope exists for a (quasi-)normal life again. Her upbeat, understanding tone never speaks over parents' heads or down to them. In short, she gets it. And for that, every reader will be grateful. -- Tara Haelle, coauthor of The Informed Parent: A Science-Based Resource for Your Child's First Four Years

About the Author

Alexis Dubief gave birth to her first child in 2006 and quickly realized that sleep – or a lack thereof – was suddenly the bane of her existence. Yet no book, website, or community seemed to have ready answers. Figuring that “this shouldn’t be so hard,” she spent the next five years researching and analyzing infant and child sleep. Combining scientific evidence with insights gleaned from working with thousands of families, she founded the Precious Little Sleep blog/podcast in 2011. In just a few short years, this passion project meant to demystify baby sleep blossomed into a popular online destination for sleep-starved parents from all over the world, garnering millions of hits annually and inspiring a loyal following. Dubief holds a Master of Finance and an MBA from the University of Colorado. A trail runner and Spartan racer, she writes and rabble rouses near Burlington, VT, with her husband and their two boys who are growing up faster than she would like.

I'm a breastfeeding, babywearing, co-sleeping mom who wanted baby #2 to be an independent sleeper. I needed to be able to more smoothly manage my life as a parent of 2 and take better care of myself sleep-wise. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from co-sleeping, and lots of good nights co-sleeping with baby #1. But there were lots of bad night also, especially when baby #1 was a toddler, and our lack of ability to manage her sleep patterns became a source of stress that affected various aspects of my family's life in a way that felt undesirable to repeat. Since my husband and I are not people who have the natural mindset or nerves to implement what it takes to achieve independent baby sleep on our own (since it pretty much has to involve crying), this book is what we used. Of all the sleep resources out there, this one resonated with me most because the advice is based on thorough reviews of the evidence on what works most easily and what is safe. Also, the author is a relatable mom so she knows how hard it can be to separate from baby, as well as the kind of information parents need in today's information overload times. I learned a ton. Previously, I had thought that getting independent sleep was about setting up a bedtime routine and then tolerating crying until baby got used to just falling asleep without another person helping. But there is so much more to it - more than any doctor, mom of an independent sleeper, family member or other sleep resource had ever shared with me. Achieving independent sleep following the advice in this book gives you a system of tools that breaks things down into manageable parts. This made me feel like I was setting up my baby to do something difficult with all the comforts and supports that are available (e.g., being really tired, being really relaxed, having non-mom/boob sleep associations, only dealing with bedtime first and dealing with night wakings and night weaning as a totally separate thing...). Overall, I felt it was empowering for me to be guided by a really smart mom in doing something really hard that would be super helpful for my own self-care and well-being. I learned a ton and the guidance worked for us. I 100% feel that there was no way I could have achieved independent sleep without the kind of information, guidance and hand holding provided by the book, the blog, the podcast, the author herself, and the very professional admins of the Facebook page. Now that my 12 month old goes down easily, sleeps all night, and wakes up happy, I feel like a happier person, I get to go to lots of yoga classes and my professional work is flourishing. I also get special time with my big girl after baby goes to bed + I get husband time and me time. I can't say enough about how good those things are for my and my family members' well-being. My baby is happy, adorable and thriving. I feel awesome and much more like a zen mom now that I am sleeping :). This has been a very empowering resource for me.I do wish that the book was a little easier to navigate. I found myself wishing that I had some sort of guide or map to help me jump to different sections. Something that would be based on specific topics of interest, baby's age, or parents' "readiness". But that's my only critique. This book and its associated resources were just what I needed to get the results I wanted. Yay!

For the first 5 months of my sons life I was slowly withering away, literally. After a somewhat traumatic c-section, a blood transfusion, thrush, poor latch, trying to control his dairy allergy by an elimination diet, and waking up every 90 minutes my postpartum depression and anxiety was becoming overwhelming. And amid all that my back was in crippling pain. I kept putting up with it, telling myself it was normal, telling myself I should be nursing around the clock, that waking up all night long was something I should just get used to, till finally my husband convinced me to go to the doctor. She ordered tests and an MRI. That scan revealed 3 compression fractures on my spine and 3 cracked ribs. The tech thought I had been in a car accident but I hadn't! So a bone density test revealed I had rare pregnancy and lactation induction osteoporosis in my spine and pre osteoporosis in my hips. My bones had broken with daily activity because they were so weak. I needed to heal. I needed to sleep. My friend (luckily) had already had high praise for the blog Troublesome Tots so I found myself at the Precious Little Sleep website. I devoured it! Alexis's voice was a life raft! I finally felt like I could get the rest I needed, not have to feel like I was a bad mom and teach my son a lifelong valuable skill.Sleep Training wasn't easy but when it started to work my confidence as a mother bloomed. I had done something right! The ppd voice inside my head that was telling me I couldn't swing this whole motherhood thing drifted away. And we all slept! My son thrived! I started getting better and proudly went on to peach that I had used SLIP and it was the best parenting decision I've ever made.So thank you Precious Little Sleep family. You saved this mom! This book is so comprehensive and offers so many tips and tricks and methods for getting your baby to sleep. It's real life advice and goes over literally every question I've ever had about how to get a baby to sleep.Alexis knows what she's talking about and this book is so easy to read and implement!

I was bummed to find out that this is basically another “cry it out” book. There is nothing precious about hearing your tiny baby screaming. I found the Facebook group to be equally as bad with moms coming together to talk about their babies crying it out for hours. No thank you

I have read just about every sleep book out there, because my daughter had a hard time sleeping for a really long time as a baby and toddler. I just had another baby and read this book cover to cover in the last week or so, and it is a huge breath of fresh air. It is evidence-based, funny, and tremendously helpful. Alexis gives a wide range of suggestions for a wide range of problems and parental approaches. Unlike basically every other sleep book I've ever read, she never says that if her methods don't work, that you are doing something wrong or not trying hard enough... instead, she gives reasons that things may not be going the way that you want. She has a solid understanding of infant and child development, the research about sleep, and the practicalities of being a parent. She is also really active on the related Facebook group and frequently gives personal advice to people struggling with issues. I have and will continue to recommend this book to all of my parent friends, because let's face it, we all struggle with sleep at some point! I am so grateful for this resource!

My baby wasn't sleeping. So common, except after reading Alexis' blog, I learned the tools and tricks to help my baby go to sleep independently, fall back asleep independently and take longer naps. She's almost 3 and sleeps wonderfully.I followed a lot of the newborn advice for my youngest and got through a lot of the early baby issues with way less problems than my first.I've gotten through the book in 2 days - the way she writes is so relatable and understanding. It's like having a sleep guru as a friend. This is a must have for any parent.

I bought this book on a whim and almost didn't get it. I was driving into work one morning a week or so ago, and heard Kenan on the air with our local guys talking about his book. I was in the 20's when the Bosnian war broke out, and I really didn't know much about it or think much about it.Kenan did a wonderful job with his narrative of what his family went through and the struggles they had to face. I was completely shocked to see this inside story of how friends had turned on him and his family because of his ethnic and religious makeup. The scary thing is, I can see this happening again in many parts of the world. The one thing I didn't like at first with the design of the story was how it would go from current day to the 1990's. It did this many times throughout the book, and I'll admit, it really frustrated me. But what I found was that it kept me sucked into the story and wanting to know more. It also let us cheat a little and skip ahead in the book each time it came to the more present time. I think this worked well and was well executed, and coupled with his skillful writing style, I thought it was a great read.I also loved the fact that he had a list of the names of the people in the book and who they were, same with places, and also a short translation guide on what certain words mean. I found myself flipping to these many times. One item that I really found nice in the book was not only the list that Kenan wanted to do if/when he returned to Bosnia, but the list he made after he visited it. His first list was more on the lines of confronting, but his second list was more on the lines on thanking. You can see the change that happened and that is a good thing. A troubled soul is not a good thing to have. The one thing I wish was different in the book were the pictures. There are not enough. Kenan talks many times about these beautiful and wonderful people who he went back to see and who he met. The times where he went to his Grandpa's grave and met the grave keeper who repaired the headstone. It would have been wonderful to have seen some of those pictures. Possibly he can place them online for us to see someday.I remember thinking back in 1984 how wonderful Sarajevo looked during the winter Olympics, and how interesting the people were. I recall saying to my parents that I wanted to go there some day. Then to see what this horrible war did to the country and how where the medals were awarded in 1984 was used as an execution place, it just saddens me. How could someone do this to their own people or their neighbors.Anyhow, I'm glad I picked this book up as it has been one of the most enjoyable reads and I was sad when the book was done... not sad on how it all ended, but wished there was more to read.John

This is an amazing story about the human spirit overcoming a complicated war that most Americans barely paid attention too. The Bosniak Muslims' own neighbors turned against them, starting with pure humiliation to murders and use of concentration camps. Fortunately, the author and some of his family fled Bosnia, risking death if caught, and ended up in the United States, ultimately becoming very successful due to their worth ethic. Other family members ended up in other areas, stayed in Bosnia or didn't survive at all. This book is about the author and his brother honoring one of his father's last wishes and taking him back to Bosnia to reunite with old friends and family who stayed behind. They found that things were never the same and even though the war was long over, Muslims were still picked on in school, and many of the author's childhood memories had been tarnished. Nevertheless, the author brought with him a list (hence the title "The Bosnia List") of the things he wanted to do and the pictures he wanted to take, that seem rather simple, but were very significant to him in his healing process. The author, now a man, would describe in detail how he felt come back and seeing his home he was forced to flee from during the war as a boy. He describes confronting people that were his friends before his war, but turned on him when the war started. Although his anger is extremely evident, his self control is more than I think I could contain. I believe he did so for his father, who basked in the glory of being the respectable social magnate he had been before the war. This is a memoir of survival, healing, forgiveness (to some extent), and the love shown for family. I hope the author at least took pride in the fact that he returned as a strong man, with a good career, while the people who turned on him I'm sure were terrified because they knew what they had done. He definitely took the high road and that deserves great praise.

i remember reading about brcko during the bosnian wars. very interesting read about a young boy caught in a situation that must have been similar for jews in germany and the occupied countries during ww2. amazing first hand information and shocking portraits of killers next door. i was especially interested in his return to his old city and what he found when he went back.recommended for anyone who wants to know how it is to survive when everyone is against you and how hard it is to integrate into america. it reminds us of how fragile life can be and how ethnic hatred can blow up into killing fields and how hard we need to work to make sure that we keep lines of communication open in our society

An Anthropologist On Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales, by Oliver Sacks

Amazon.com Review

The works of neurologist Oliver Sacks have a special place in the swarm of mind-brain studies. He has done as much as anyone to make nonspecialists aware of how much diversity gets lumped under the heading of "the human mind." The stories in An Anthropologist on Mars are medical case reports not unlike the classic tales of Berton Roueché in The Medical Detectives. Sacks's stories are of "differently brained" people, and they have the intrinsic human interest that spurred his book Awakenings to be re-created as a Robin Williams movie. The title story in Anthropologist is that of autistic Temple Grandin, whose own book Thinking in Pictures gives her version of how she feels--as unlike other humans as a cow or a Martian. The other minds Sacks describes are equally remarkable: a surgeon with Tourette's syndrome, a painter who loses color vision, a blind man given the ambiguous gift of sight, artists with memories that overwhelm "real life," the autistic artist Stephen Wiltshire, and a man with memory damage for whom it is always 1968. Oliver Sacks is the Carl Sagan or Stephen Jay Gould of his field; his books are true classics of medical writing, of the breadth of human mentality, and of the inner lives of the disabled. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Most see a disability as an impairment of normal function; however, some see a disability as a source of creativity and innovation. Being blind means that one does not exist in the perceptual world of sight; on the contrary, that individual may have a greater presence in the perceptual world of touch, taste, smell, and hearing. Therefore, a conclusion may be drawn that a perceptual world is different for each individual, but that perceptual world contributes to the experience of the individual regardless of its constituents. In a few case studies of paradoxical neurological disorders Oliver Sacks illustrates the perceptual words of those who differ from the norm. Oliver Sacks was a British born neurologist that spent the majority of his professional life in the United States. In addition to being a well-known physician, Sacks was also a naturalist and author who wrote many best-selling books; including, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, and An Anthropologist on Mars.A common motif that is explored throughout An Anthropologist on Mars is sight. The multiple sections of An Anthropologist on Mars detail longitudinal case studies, with a majority of them pertains to discrepancies in visual perception; however, all of them pertain to individuals that use their afflictions as a source of creativity. Sight happens to be a very relatable topic of interest to Sacks, since he was documented as having been diagnosed prosopagnosia, or the impairment of facial recognition. As a physician, Oliver Sacks fosters a relationship with the individuals of his case studies that transcends the traditional doctor and patient relationship. In the section The Last Hippie, Sacks visits his patient Greg in an in an assisted living facility for several years and even indulges Greg and his love of rock music by arranging to take him to a Grateful Dead concert. In An Anthropologist on Mars, Sacks outlines each of his case studies with a different section of the novel that are all mutually exclusive from one another. These sections illustrate: a color-blind painter, a blind man who believes he is living in the sixties, a surgeon with Tourette’s syndrome, a man who lost his sight in early childhood to regain it in his mid-fifties, an artist who creates his artwork solely from memory, a young artist savant, and an professor with autism with extraordinary empathy for animals. Sacks goes to great lengths to get to know his patients on a personal level and learn as much as they can about how they go through life, oftentimes shadowing them at both work and home to get a sense of both their private and personal lives. In the case of the surgeon with Tourette’s syndrome, Oliver Sacks lived his Bennett, the subject of his study, and scrubbed in on several of his scheduled surgeries. The reason Sacks is able to share so much insight on the perceptual worlds of the subjects of his case studies is that he fosters close personal relationships with them.I believe that through several unique case studies, Oliver Sacks is making a statement about perceptual disabilities illustrating the concept that those afflicted by perceptual disorders are not characterized by their disorders, rather that the disorder is characterized by the individual. In the section an Anthropologist on Mars, a professor at Colorado State University who is autistic, is interviewed by Sacks and it is clear that she is aware of her strengths and weaknesses. “Temple’s attitudes seem similar to this: she is very aware (if only intellectually, inferentially) of what she is missing in life, but equally (and directly) aware of her strengths, too- her concentration, her intensity of thought…” (Sacks 277). Despite Temple’s difficulty pertaining to social perception, she is able to live a rich and productive life; ironically, empathizing with other animals. This autistic professor has a doctorate in animal science, but lacks the ability to distinguish tears of joy from tears of sadness; however, she is not defined by her ability to judge social cues but rather by her valued contributions to the scientific community. The scientific community, specifically the medical community, can also benefit from another subject of Sack’s case studies. Tourette’s is a compromising disorders that affects the ability for individuals to pursue certain professions due to nervous ticks; in opposition to traditional thought, surgeon is not one of those professions. “His whole identity at such times is that of a surgeon at work, and his entire psychic and neural organization becomes aligned with this, becomes active, focuses, at ease, un-Tourettic” (Sacks 98). Sacks depicts the personal life of Bennet as characterized by extreme ticking; on the contrary, in his profession Bennet is able to perform surgery with the utmost care and precision. Despite Bennet’s nervous ticking, he is able to meet the expectations of his profession where under traditional standards he would be discriminated against.Discrimination is a concept usually given a negative connotation; however, in regards to the visible light spectrum discrimination is essential. In the event of an accidental car crash, Johnathan lost the ability to discriminate color. “Although Mr. I does not deny his loss, and at some level still mourns it, he has come to feel that his vision has become ‘highly refined,’ ‘privileged,’ that he sees a world of pure form, uncluttered of color” (Sacks 38). An artist in his mid-fifties that made formerly made a living off of his colored painting was forced to reinvent his style so late in life due to a tragic accident. Despite losing the fundamental aspect of color, Johnathan was able to prosper in a new black and white phase of his life, evidence that deficiencies in perception is not what defines us.The contributions to our perceptual world is different for each individual, but that perceptual world contributes to the experience of the individual regardless of its constituents. Oliver Sacks does a phenomenal job of illustrating the boundaries of the perceptual worlds of the subjects of his case studies. Sacks provides in depth psychological and biological analysis regarding several unique case studies of which demonstrate that those afflicted by perceptual disorders are not characterized by their disorders, rather that the disorder is characterized by the individual.

Oliver Sacks delves deeply into the lives and minds of uniquely different individuals, including Temple Grandin, who has autism and studied "normal" or "neurotypical" people like an "Anthropologist on Mars," because she had no clue about how other people think or act and she desperately wanted to know how she could go about having social interactions in the world she had landed in. The essays in this book, including another one about a surgeon with Tourette's who is able to do delicate, difficult operations for 6 hours straight and who then goes home and punches holes in the dining room walls of his house, are all fascinating, perceptive, and eloquently written. This is the first book about autism that I read after my own son was diagnosed at 3 1/2. He had regressed in language and spoke only in a perseverative babble for years. But, for him, music was the way "back into the world." He taught himself to read at the age of 9 through studying the lyrics of the songs he was listening to on the way to countless therapies.Utterly incredible, but just this last week, my son with autism, Rio, aka "Soulshocka," was chosen to open the show, performing his own original rap song at the Club Nokia in L.A. in a Tribute to Temple Grandin herself.Somehow, the circle seems magically complete now.

If you liked "the man who mistook his wife for a hat", you will like this book. It has a similar structure with Oliver presenting a case and describing his ideas about what he thinks is going on. Personally, I do not think I would have enjoyed it as much without my kindle to look up words every couple pages. If you are not familiar with Oliver Sacks, you should know that he uses A LOT (I mean a LOT) of footnotes. And it can be disruptive to the flow of reading.Kindle note: The footnotes that come up on the bottom sometimes do not contain the entire thing, so you have to click "go to footnotes" and read it there (it usually goes on to the next page) then go back to the number of the footnote and click it to go back to your spot. Its slightly annoying, but I give the book five stars because Oliver Sacks is a fantastic writer.

As with many of Sacks' books, this is a collection of Sacks observations and clinical examinations of patients with neurological "disorders". Ranging from Tourette's to severe autism, Sacks' patients run the gamut of neuro-psychological states. As is typical with Sacks, not only does he attempt to document the condition of the individuals he also attempts to document their humanity and personality. That being said, I did find this particular volume to be somewhat more clinical in tone, and occasionally somewhat speculative. However, the book is phenomenally well-documented, with abundant footnotes, endnotes, and bibliography. Hopefully readers of this book will come away with a greater sense of empathy for, and understanding of, individuals living with the documented conditions.

If I could travel with only one guidebook on Antigua and Barbuda, this would be the one. The author covers activities from the frivolous to the serious; from nightlife, Carnival, and Sailing Week to environmental awareness, and the local humane society. In addition to the breath of topics covered, the author has done an outstanding job in capturing the flavor of the island in photography, commendable consideration given to the inclusion of many locals in context and throughout the contents. As one who spent most of my formative years in Antigua before leaving 35 years ago, this book has brought back many old memories of traditional customs - Cricket p75, and Long Ghost p88; as well as introduced new activities I was unaware of such as Ballooning p82 and motor racing p144. Over the past 15 years my family and I have made more than 10 visits to Antigua, I was unaware of motor racing or that horse racing was still a big activity on Antigua. (We have not made it to Barbuda as yet). If limited buying only one travel guide on Antigua and Barbuda, this one stands out, there is something for everyone.

Very informative. Great pictures.
