“Maurice” by E. M. Forster is an English language literary masterpiece classic, written in 1913-14, revised in 1932 and revised again in 1959-60, but not published until 1971 after Forster’s death. One movie, following closely the story line of the book, was produced in 1987, with notable super-stars featured, including a young Hugh Grant. Though good and beautifully filmed, the movie is far less impactful than the book. The title of this review (“You can do anything once you know what it is”) is taken directly from the text at about 90%, with Maurice stating that philosophical gem to Scudder. There are 3 primary characters: Maurice, Clive, and Alec (Scudder), all beautiful, youthful, intelligent Brits. It is a story of secret gay love in the early 20th Century, just before the onset of World War I and takes place in England, still largely Victorian in its thinking and mores. What is particularly interesting is the sociological-historical-legal-psychological context in which this story of same sex coupling takes place. The book abounds with harsh criticism of British (indeed, world) attitudes, laws, and views of homosexuality, as it was considered then (as it still is now in many places in the world) a criminal act and or a psychological deficiency, even a mental illness; in short homosexuality was something despicable and in need of erasure. Christianity and the ruling intelligentsia take a big hit from Forster. Thus, his book takes a more direct approach to the topic of gay love than, say, Mary Renault does in her exceptionally good books of same-sex love in ancient times (such as the times of Alexander the Great), including “The Persian Boy” published in 1972.All characters are perfectly captured as representatives of class society in Britain, which in the early 1900s still dominated everyday life, but it was also obvious that class society was crumbling and on its way out, due primarily to its inherent ridiculousness and the rise of a more educated middle class. Nonetheless, Maurice’s eventual final choice of partner may even be more shocking to fellow characters in the story and to readers alike who have an eye to the past, insofar as Alec (Scudder) is “low-born”.It has a slight “Days of Our Lives” feel to it (in the soap opera sense), but that aspect does not detract or subtract from the power and beauty (or message) of the story. It’s a classic novel of course, a wonderful read, and now in 2016, some 100 years later, serves well as an historical reminder of the bad old days.A 5+ of course.

The book kept my attention from page one to the end. Forster had great insight into human nature and gave the characters believable personalities that made me want to continue reading about them. Homosexuality was taboo in his day, and sadly we have not come so far that it is no longer a state that people struggle with and fear being rejected for. Self-loathing and suicidal thoughts plagued Forster’s main character...100 years later, young men and women still harbour these feelings for the very same reasons.Spoiler Alert...Maurice ended up choosing Hope over Defeat, and that is a relevant message worth reading today.

I HAVE LOVED THIS BOOK FOR 27 YEARS. I WAS A VERY YOUNG MAN AND RATHER CONVENTIONAL WHEN I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS REMARKABLE GEM. THIS BOOKED SAVED ME, IT BECAME MY LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS. IT GAVE ME HOPE, I WAS SO MOVED BY THE STORY. IN 1988 I HAD KNOW IDEA THAT EDWARDIAN COULD TEACH ME ANYTHING, I WAS HAPPILY PROVED WRONG.

I was exposed to E. M. Forster in college and I enjoyed reading him and loved his characterizations and motivations. I didn't know at first that Forster was gay in a time when that was very problematic. Forster penned Maurice but could never publish it in his lifetime. After his death it came to light at a moment when momentum was beginning for gay rights. It defies the restrictive convention that 'gay' stories had to end in misery. Maurice has a happy ending, making Forster's point that happiness in love is attainable in any way. As usual, the story is peppered with Forster's cogent observations on class and the often silly conventions of society. It is rooted in a specific place and time so some readers may find it's descriptions somewhat dated but I think there is enough universality there to address questions we still ask.

Maurice is not an easy book to read... literally. The (beautiful) Edwardian language and dialogue posed some challenges for me. However, it gets easier as the story moves along and the final reward makes it well worth the small effort. Forster's outsider view in life leads to great insight of the three main characters of the novel. He takes a no holds barred approach in telling the story of homosexual love and class divisions in early 20th century England. While the intimate scenes in the book are only alluded to with words like "sharing"... the feelings are clear and have more impact owing to the lack of physical detail. This book is an important work in lgbt literature because it presents a happy (if implausible) ending for the protagonists at a time when homosexual acts were criminal. Forster dedicated this book "To A Happier Year"... and in writing Maurice he hastened its arrival.

Actually, I bought the book as a gift for a young writer who knew of Forster's "A Passage to India" --but not the excellent film version--but not this work that the author prevented from being published until after his death. He was quite closeted during his lifetime. It's a beautiful love story of two Oxford students who fall in love but are mindful of the societal (and British law) condemnation of homosexuality. It is not graphic nor did it need to be; neither was the somewhat recent film version with a young Hugh Grant as one of our protagonists. But it was charming what with its treatment of the privileged classes and the adoration of the other protagonist by a gameskeeper on the other chap's estate. When the class distinction melts away because mutual love and respect, we find Forster at his finest, that for him, love does conquer all. It certainly resonates with today's social mobility of the LGBT community whose championing of Constitutional guarantees of equal protection are bringing down state laws banning same-sex marriage. Forster would be proud.

A must read for everyone who claims the title of "Christian."It brings sights, smells, and sounds to the countryside that got to touch Jesus. In today's U.S. Christian society, people often try to shrug off pain and make light of prayer. "It's for the best," "It will turn out great for me because I claimed this scripture," or even "I know the plans for you...plans for hope..."This book helps reveal why prayer is not a magic formula. Life is tough and painful. If it was for Jesus (our Savior, the Word, the SON of God) then what makes us think we deserve better?

This book was such a blessing for me that I purchased it for each of the members of my home Bible Studygroup. It made my reading of the gospels come alive with the dramatici stories that Timothy Jones portrayed throughout this work. I highly recommend it. It is in a very different style from anything else I have read.

Interesting. Not quite what I expected, but an interesting read. Have not finished yet.

Fantabulous book, read it!!

Yes, this book is a life-changer. As a life long Christian I have been blessed so much receiving this Jewish perspective on Jesus' prayers.

After reading "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus by Spangler & Tverberg," I was interested in learning more about Jewish prayers and praying in the first century. I expected "Praying Like the Jew, Jesus" to dig deeper into that information, but it only gave a little, easy-to-find information on that."Praying Like the Jew, Jesus" is mainly a series of sermons (or "devotional thoughts") about God. Each chapter started with a page containing prayers from the Bible or from Jewish tradition, like prayers spoken at the passover or at a wedding. He then wrote a fictional account of a scene from Jesus' life where this prayer or blessing happened or might have happened. Sometimes he wrote a page or two about the cultural aspects of the prayer, but he generally just launched into his sermon. The devotionals/sermons were ok, but they weren't why I had wanted the book. The fictional parts didn't focus on providing cultural background information that would help the reader better understand the scene, like I had expected. I noticed some misleading, speculative, and even incorrect information in his fictional accounts. For the Passover scene, he wrote on page 82, "[Jesus]...ripped the bread into two jagged chunks...Yochanan tore off a small piece...and passed the chunk to Ya`akov." This sounds like a loaf of leavened bread, but unleavened bread (which is like a cracker) would have been used. The Passover meal started at sunset, yet the author had the sun setting ("fading sunlight," page 89) after they finished the Passover meal. For an earlier fictional scene, the author had Simon Peter thinking of how embarrassed he was to follow Jesus and maybe he'd made a mistake in following Jesus since a physical kingdom wasn't in sight. Um, Peter was the one who said, "You are the Messiah" (Mark 8:29) and told Jesus (after a confusing sermon and Jesus asked if they would leave him): "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68) and so on. He was arguing about who would be first in the Kingdom up until after the Last Supper. If the author had used Judas Iscariot, at least his doubting would be consistent with the Biblical account. If you're looking for a book focusing on the historical, Jewish background information regarding prayer, this isn't really a good source. If you want a devotional book on how unpredictable God is (with repeated comments about how people who prayed in the Bible often ended up tortured and/or dead--yup, that sure encourages me to pray!), then this book might interest you.

First, let me say i enjoyed "reading" this book. The idea of "filling in the blanks" that surround Yeshua growing up and going into ministry, with Jewish culture and tradition, is nice. However, many times the author (as do many Messianic commentators, too quickly) will say that Yeshua, or the Ruach, or another Biblical character said or heard or did "such and such" when the "such & such" is really something that Judaism from the past 1000 years or 1500 years (maybe slighly more SOMETIMES)has made into a practice. We honestly DON'T KNOW if these things really were a full part of Yeshua's life when He was a child or if His mom heard these things, or if other Biblical Brethren from days past heard or said these things or did them. My family likes the rich traditions of Biblical Judaism (verses much of the more Modern Rabbinical Judaism), and my family even uses some of the modern practices that are Biblically encouraging, but to assume that the Master and others did the exact things (or heard, or felt, or said...) is NOT to be treating like fact! Sometimes these "possibilities" are treated as "likelihoods" which is somewhat appropriate, but the chain of events listed in the book are tying what we DO know for sure, with what can be classified as conjecture, forming a thought in your mind as if it were a single unified factual ride thru history all the sudden (when it isn't provable at all).As for the basic good Torah style love God & neighbor thoughts it presents, they are done well. All in all this is a good book, but i was personally looking for more of a research oriented, factually stated, background and historical finding on 1st Century prayers. This book is nice, but also has a heavy dose of conjecture. Buy it if you want a good read, but DON'T be confused between fact & lore (a temptation when also reading Modern Rabbinic lore).

From the Back Cover

Provocative Perspectives on Emerging Conversations"This is the most complete, detailed, critically sympathetic, and totally remarkable overview I have yet seen of where Emergence Christianity presently is and appears to be going. McKnight's two essays alone are worth the price of admission."--Phyllis Tickle, author, The Great Emergence"At root, the emerging church movement is a set of conversations about living more faithfully into the way of Jesus and the implications of this for the life and witness of Christian communities. This book offers a series of reflections from some of the best-known voices on a range of important questions. These essays extend the conversation in significant ways and make it clear that the questions stirred up are worth pursuing."--John R. Franke, Biblical Seminary; theologian in residence, First Presbyterian Church of Allentown"Over its short history, the emerging church has both challenged and inspired the practice of church in our time. Church in the Present Tense brings together in one volume some of its finest thinkers to reflect on the theological and practical contributions of this movement. In concise and helpful essays, they lead us through the impact of 'emerging' on our views of God, salvation, Scripture, the end times, and the practice of worship. Whatever you might think of the movement, you cannot ignore its impact, and this volume won't let you!"--David Fitch, Northern Seminary; author, The End of Evangelicalism?"Rather than retreading old ground, Church in the Present Tense looks at the still-evolving emerging church movement from new angles, and readers will be rewarded with new insights. We are in very good hands with Scot, Pete, Kevin, and Jason--they appreciate the movement, but they aren't playing Pollyanna. They're tough, smart, articulate interlocutors. I think this book will be seen as among the best interactions with the emerging church movement."--Tony Jones, theologian in residence, Solomon's Porch, Minneapolis; author, The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier

My rating refers only to the Kindle version...I do want to read "Church in the Present Tense." I begin a course of study in September and Dr. Jason Clark is one of the instructors. I would like to read some of his writing. The Kindle version, however, lacks an index with chapter/essay links. This requires scrolling through essays to find the one you want and in addition, you cannot really see the organization of essays from a topical perspective. I only read a small portion of the book in order to make sure I could return it for credit. When you buy the Kindle version, you must also sacrifice the 60 min DVD that accompanies the print version. No chapter headings...How absurd!Ron Baker

I am recently began reading Church in the Present Tense. I began with the last chapter by Scot McKnight on the theology of Atonement and then read his chapter on the emerging view of scripture, and finally went back to the first chapter on Philosophical Realism by Corcoran. All three chapters were delightful and refreshing. The book (as far as I have read) is very good. It deals with various aspects of what is broadly called postmodernism and how these aspects may influence our society, culture, and consequently the Church. The Church in both the sense of theological content and methods of communications. Scot McKnight writes two chapters in the final section of the book. Since I have not read the whole book, I will only comment on the final chapter. What it boils down to is this: the Evangelical church of the last 50 years (more or less) has focused on a clear, logical exposition of what is called the "plan of salvation." This includes concepts such as atonement and propitiation for sins. The thinking has been that new converts need to understand cognitively how salvation works in order to believe and receive it logically. The postmodern churches and fellowships that are popping up among 20-something young adults (otherwise often referred to as "emerging" churches - but not always) tend to play down the emphasis on such legal or forensic concepts as atonement and propitiation (in other words, the legal substitutionary death of Christ on our behalf in order to grant forgiveness) in favor of telling a story of Jesus as the liberator or Jesus the messiah bringing social justice and reconciliation to the earth. Before you react, give McKnight a good reading. He is very balanced, and he clearly affirms that he does believe in the substitutionary death of Christ. However, he balances the scale with a careful critique of the Evangelical tendency to replace "the Gospel of the Kingdom" with the "Plan of Salvation" and equate the two ... nevertheless, McKnight demonstrates that no where in the New Testament do we see Paul or Peter actually preaching a sermon based on the so-called Plan of Salvation. Instead, they told the story of the Messiah and the good news of his kingdom and most often connected that story with Israel's history.Sorry to belabor the point, but this is very important if we are going to be attempting to lead 20-something millennials to faith in Christ. We need to rethink and re-theologize our message for this current culture (I know many will disagree with me).Based on the 3 chapters I have read, this is an excellent and balanced introduction to many of these philosophical and theological issues that will continue to grow around us in the coming years.

For those Christians or anyone out there that wants to have a better understanding of where church is going or has come to (with postmodernity in mind)then this is the book for you.

In his very helpful Introduction to this 2011 book, Editor Kevin Corcoran states, “The Christian church has a history… What we know as the ‘emerging church’ is no different. It too has a history. Its history begins in the early 1990s… [as some] began what can best be described as ‘experiments in worship.’ These communities were self-consciously contextual, both culturally and geographically… These communities also exploited the emerging cultural resources known and daily used by its members, including technological resources such as new media and social networking resources that were just coming into existence via the world wide web. Many of these experiments were not originally undertaken outside of in opposition to the institutional church… What we know as the emerging church in the United States began later, in the late 1990s… it seems fair to say that the US emerging church movement began as a reaction against institutional church within evangelical Protestantism… the emerging church in the United States was from its inception concerned with rethinking and reimagining Christian theology as well as Christian practice.” (Pg. xi-xiii)He continues, “Postmodernism… is both a CULTURAL phenomenon and a PHILOSOPHICAL movement… philosophical postmodernism involves… calling into question ‘metanarratives,’ or grand stories of the world and our place in it. The Christian story is one such narrative. Atheistic naturalism is another… What gets called into question … is our ability to float free of the grand narratives we find ourselves in and to view things from a ‘God’s eye view.’ … This, I suggest, leads those in the movement to emphatically promote tolerance and enthusiastically participate in dialogue---religious, political, and otherwise. Second, emerging Christians tend to be theologically pluralistic and suspicious of tidy theological boxes… Third, emerging Christians believe the church must change if it is to speak meaningfully to a postmodern culture… Fourth, participants in the emerging and altworship movements are passionate about the present. The gospel, they want us to Realize, is about the here and now, and not a ticket to secure a place in the there and then of heaven.” (Pg. xiii-xiv)He explains, “COMMUNITY: Emerging Christians place a premium on community, on living life together in all its messiness. However, community can take many shapes, and emerging or altworship communities often do not resemble tradition church community with a paid staff and centralized leadership… TRANSFORMATION: Emerging types are passionate about transformation, both personal and structural. They tend not to view themselves as finished products, as ‘saved’ or even as ‘Christian.’ Instead, they speak of themselves as ‘BEING saved’ and ‘BECOMING Christian.’ … WORSHIP: Emerging Christians are innovative and imaginative in the aesthetics of worship, and they are technologically savvy. They’re sacramental and incarnational… SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT: Emerging Christians enthusiastically endorse Jesus’s claim that ‘by their fruits you will know them.’ Thus, they seek to be the active agents of God’s reconciling, redemptive, and restorative agenda in and for the world. They are thus politically and socially engaged.” (Pg. xv-xvi)Besides Corcoran, the other contributors are Peter Rollins, Jason Clark, and Scot McKnght. The essays are grouped into Philosophy; Theology; Worship; and Bible and Doctrine. In his essay, “The Kingdom of God (on Earth),” Corcoran says, “the kingdom has not yet been fully consummated. It is still a kingdom ON ITS WAY, even if it is also, and at the same time, a kingdom ALREADY COME… there is actually ample evidence of its present reality… Wherever you find people healing one another’s wounds, praying and working for justice and peace, railing against justice and oppression, wherever you discover broken lives made whole and redeemed, there you are witness to the present reality of God’s kingdom.” (Pg. 65)He poses the question, “Are emerging Christians religious pluralists?... Many of the emerging Christians I know believe that devout and sincere practitioners of religious traditions other than Christianity have genuine EXPERIENCES of God, that God has not limited God’s self-disclosure to Christians. But, again, this is not to deny that God was UNIQUELY present in Jesus and that salvation comes through Christ alone… I should hasten to point out that one might be … an inclusivist or universalist with respect to whom that salvation and reconciliation ultimately applies. And, in fact, many in the emerging conversation find what I like to call ‘christocentric universalism’---the belief that eventually ALL human beings are reconciled to God in Christ—extremely attractive. Some, sadly, may first need to experience the torments of hell, but eventually love will win, God will win, and ALL will be saved.” (Pg. 68-69)This is an excellent volume, that will be of great value to anyone studying the Emerging Church, or similar movements in contemporary Christianity.
