From the Back Cover

"[This book] collects together, largely for the first time, a series of chapters dedicated to all the ways in which molecular modeling/computational chemistry can impact organic chemistry."--Christopher J. Cramer, author of Essentials ofComputational Chemistry: Theories and ModelsComputational Organic Chemistry provides a practical overview of the ways in which computational modeling methods and applications can be used in organic chemistry to predict the structure and reactivity of organic molecules. After a concise survey of computational methods, the book presents in-depth case studies that show how various computational methods have provided critical insight into the nature of organic mechanisms. With a focus on methodologies, this unique resource: Discusses simple molecular properties, pericyclic reactions, carbenes and radicals, anion chemistry, solvent effects, and moreFeatures sidebars that offer a personal look at some of the leading practitioners in the fieldConveys the strengths and limitations of each method, so that readers develop a feel for the correct "tool" to use in the context of a specific problemFurther informs readers with a supporting Web site that provides links to materials cited and features a blog that discusses and provides links to new relevant articles at www.trinity.edu/sbachrac/coc/ This is a great reference for practicing physical organic and computational chemists, as well as a thought-provoking textbook for graduate-level courses in computational chemistry and organic chemistry.

(See also my review of the first edition.) This updated edition corrects the few errors that I noticed in the earlier one, and includes newer results that appeared in the literature after the publication of the first edition.Of the dozens of books on computational modeling that I have read, all of the rest seem to be aimed at an audience of mathematicians who develop computational methods. In contrast, this is the only book I have found aimed at an audience of chemists who are primarily interested in using extant computational tools to answer "chemistry" questions without necessarily worrying about what is "under the hood." At the same time, sufficient theoretical background is included to give users a firm grasp of the scope and limitations of any particular method. An exceptional work, a Magnum Opus, meticulously thorough and rigorously documented. I recommend it without hesitation or qualification.

The second edition of Bachrach's book is even better, and more detailed, than the first. It is written for the organic experimentalist, not the mathematician or theorist. It is a superb introduction to the computational tools and techniques available to help plan experiments, and to interpret the results. It should be on the bookshelf of every student of organic chemistry, and every practicing organic chemist.

The second edition of Bachrach's book (for comments about the 1-st edition see my older review) is a nice addition to the collection of computational quantum chemistry books which comes with extended and updated chapters along with two brand-new chapters. The new chapters are one about "Computed Spectral Properties and Structure Identification" and another about "Computational Approaches to Understanding Enzymes". The former is especially important for the identification of natural organic compounds which are extracted from plants or living organisms and do require an identification of their molecular structure using spectroscopic/crystallographic methods - computed spectroscopic properties represent a powerful tool for the identification process because upon comparing them against the experimental data it is possible to assign the correct 3D structure to the novel compound. The latter chapter is useful for those intending to study biological systems with the aid of QM/MM methods. With these methods one can treat the important residues in the active site and the substrate at the QM level while the remaining atoms of the enzyme can be treated at the MM level. On his website, the author maintains a blog with novel information and a lively discussion about the topics treated inside the book. Both students and professionals will benefit from reading this book.

Review

How I wish I'd found this book ten years ago.... When I stumbled on this book two months ago, I was thrilled. Critics might see it as a soft-core, everything-and-the-kitchen-sick approach to discussing religion, but that's exactly what I needed. (Julia Glass Cookie 2008-10-01)This is a thoughtful introduction to the many meanings of God, to the world's religions, and the author even gives a moment's thought to the many ways to pray. (Christine Watson Santa Cruz Sentinel 1990-11-23)A delightfully ecumenical book that answers questions straightforwardly and stresses the similarities of the world's religions in simple language. The color pictures are whimsical and sure to delight readers of all ages. (Washington Post)Etan Boritzer provides young people with interesting, thoughtful perspectives to these types of questions about God... Many spiritual questions are pondered and are presented in a way that shows that...ultimately we all believe in the same things.... A great addition to any home or school library. Highly Recommended. (Lisa Case Canadian Review of Materials, Vol. XVII, No. 27 2012-04-13)

As an agnostic living in a small very Christian centered town, I've struggled to explain god, religion and church to my young children. Now that one is in school he is asking a lot of questions based on the things his friends have been telling him about god and Jesus. Whenever I have trouble explaining big ideas I usually look for a book that helps impart the big ideas, but also lets my children think for themselves. On this topic, there really aren't many that fit the bill. I read this book today and it is perfect. The book describes the feeling of god, like when you are on a mountain top, or you look at the stars, but it's also when you feel connected to other people even when they aren't around, like your mom and dad. It explains different major religions and talks about how they differ very slightly and yet all aim to do good. It touches on the topic that some people fight over religion. It also explains how to pray, why people pray and names different spiritual teachers such as Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed and Moses.I actually think it helped me put into words how I feel about god.If you are trying to impart a specific dogma to your children, then this may not be the book for you, but I also don't think it really goes against anything you might teach in your specific church. It just talks about how different people feel about god in the world. If you want to help your children learn about god and religion in an open minded way, this is a great resource. I also purchased a book about the life of Jesus and another about the life of Buddha to give them some context as to who some of these people were. I think every adult and child should read this book!

This is what I was looking for in a general overview of religion that was good for kids. But they didn't even touch on the idea of a belief in no god. A book like this should at least touch on all human concepts of religion at least from a general perspective. No need to go in detail but, to omit the idea of "no god" seems like a desired omission or gross over sight.

I absolutely love this book! It's a great open-minded, non-doctrine based view of God for children. God is a tough concept to explain to children, and this book helps a lot without introducing unwanted concepts from any particular religion. It was written by a Unitarian Universalist minister, and follows along with the Unitarian philosophy generally. This book is not for traditionalist or fundamentalist Christians or those with specific doctrine they want their children to learn, but good for those with a broader understanding of God as a spiritual force connecting all of us. My 4 year old has responded to it well and keeps wanting to read "the God book". I have recommended this to several of my friends and have even bought copies to gift to others.

I got this to read to my 5 year old son, who has had lots of questions about God. My husband and I see the value in many different world religions, and are believers in a higher power in our universe, but are not comfortable with what we perceive to be the exclusivity and limited outlooks of most religions. This book was perfect. It's accepting and gentle of all forms of belief, and emphasizes the important messages shared across all world religions - most importantly our connection to each other and the world around us. It somehow lays this out in a way that's accessible to a five year old -- bravo.

We love this book. Our family is Catholic and Atheist and found this to be a great middle ground. I suppose some very traditionally religious people might take issue with the loose concept of God as everything but I think it has helped my 7 year old to be more open, accepting. I also love that it addresses the similarities between major religions and emphasizes that we are all similar and human. Highly recommend.

This book is exactly what I've been looking for! It talks about the major world religions and the similarities they share. It discusses how religious differences spark conflict when they really shouldn't, and it talks about the nature of God.The negative reviews here are from folks who cannot consider religion from a viewpoint outside of their own. Perhaps if they could, there would be less religious fighting in the world. So grateful to have this to share with my kids.

Beautiful book that examines the question from all angles.Warning: Do not read if you don't want your child's mind to be opened.

This is a fantastic book regardless of your religious affiliation or lack thereof. The general message of connectedness is perfect, and I love how it defines various aspects of different religions before moving into the philosophical stuff. My 5 year old loves this book, and it's really inspired some very cool conversations.

Five big stars for my favorite volume of The Sandman yet. I was told, somewhere around volume 3, that the comic gets better from there - volume by volume. So far, that has been absolutely true. Gaiman hit his stride with The Sandman a few volumes ago and has kept right on walking. He is a talented writer, with a whole host of talented artists, letterers, editors and others alongside him. Mix all this together and you have one heck of a comic book.In this volume Delirium of the Endless, and sister to Dream, has decided to find her lost brother. She begins to enlist her siblings for help, and finds a companion for her journey in Morpheus. I absolutely loved Delirium in this volume. She was perfectly written, very funny, and her character really shone. The dynamic between her and Morpheus was a treat. It was also interesting to note in this volume certain story lines that popped back up from earlier volumes. Story lines that, at the time, I did not realize would be connected to later events. Gaiman has placed these connections seamlessly in his story thus far, and it's fun to see. Looking forward to volume 8.

Brief Lives is yet another great installment in a series already filled with great installments. I would say that BL is both the funniest and the most philosophical that the Sandman has ever been. The humor is due in large part to the glorious return of dreams youngest sister, Delirium. She...you just can't describe it really, which is appropriate for her character. I guess I would have to say her ADD type personality leads to some laugh out loud moments. Especially when she gets together with Matthew. The rest of the humor and the philosophy comes from Dream's long lost brother, the prodigal. For those who haven't read, I won't give away his real name. This man is the most reflective of the endless, and the reasons for abandoning his realm are finally revealed. Long time Gaiman fans may also notice the seeds being planted for his novel American Gods, released in the early 2000's.This isn't my favorite story in the series, but it is for a lot of others that I know. Get reading!

Neil Gaiman's 9-issue BRIEF LIVES arc, like much of the Sandman series, is full of ideas. In this run, Dream finds himself seeking out his long lost brother, Destruction. This review is written with the mind that readers are familiar with the story. If you are not familiar with Sandman, this is not a good starting point. Instead, I'd recommend starting from the beginning: The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes.Sandman is like a nice wine; it's best consumed slowly. It's all to easy with comics/graphic novels to propel through the book without taking in much of the illustration or dialogue, but these details are what makes this series stand above the rest. There's plenty of things to think about and dwell on here -- don't rush through and miss them! What can you expect from this storyline? This collection is notable for a few reasons:Destruction's abandonment of his duties have been alluded to since early in the series -- BRIEF LIVES brings those loose ends to a close and pays off expectations. Readers will be able to find out what this long-lost brother has been up to since his "retirement."A closer look at Dream's family -- readers will be given more access to The Endless. Some of the characters that the audience is a little less familiar with (Delirium, Despair, and Destruction in particular) receive more attention. Gaiman continues to flesh out the Sandman universe and does not disappoint.Whatever happened to Dream's son? A loose thread involving Orpheus is picked up within this arc. I won't speak to whether this thread is still hanging at the close of BRIEF LIVES.In addition to these points, Gaiman plays around with some ideas of what being an old god in a new world is like. These sorts of themes would go on to fill out American Gods. With most of the other Sandman entries, there is a flurry of ideas on most pages, so the earlier recounted few are not an exhaustive list. A stray observation: it's nice to see Gaiman realizes that Dream takes himself so so seriously. It's fun to see the author make fun of himself with some of the characters' comments on his dourness. If you have read the first 6 trade-paperback collections, Volume 7 (BRIEF LIVES) is worth your time and money in a big way.

First up, all of the 10 volumes of The Sandman novels deserve 5 stars. They are a phenomenal acheivement in not only graphic novels but in storytelling itself. The story is complex and cerebral and the characters so well developed that Sandman is one of my favorite stories period. The novels are intensely violent and often disturbing but everything that happens serves a purpose, and nothing happens by chance or just for the sake of things happening. Something that happens in one volume may become vitally important 3 or 4 volumes later. By the end of the 10th volume everything has come full circle with an appropriate and satisfying end. With regards to Volume 7, it is good, and central to the story arc, but not my favorite volume. This is primarily because I had a hard time personally relating to the character of Delirium. She was written to be that way but she is an often confusing and difficult character to follow. The story concerns Delirium's wish to reunite with her brother Destruction (one of the Endless who abandoned his responsibilities many years previously). When Desire and Despair both turn her away she goes to Dream who agrees to accompany her.As far as the volume's content on the Kindle Fire - I was hesitant to abandon the volumes in print worried that the Kindle Fire might provide a more difficult viewing experience. That hasn't turned out the be the case. The novel is easy to read, you can scan in to specific boxes, and the colors are vibrant.
