An excellent book for understanding streaming analytics applications. Covers a wide spectrum of views from historical background, current commercial solutions, system architecture considerations and core analytics implementation, all with a focus on realtime inline data analytics processing. The scope of the book is very wide but at the same time there are many detailed examples. Cannot recommend too highly.

Internet of things, cloud and mobile are the major drivers for stream processing. Use cases are network monitoring, intelligent surveillance, but also less technical things such as inventory management or fraud detection. The book helps a lot to get a basic understanding about history, concepts and patterns of the stream processing paradigm.CONTENTThe book starts with an introduction to stream processing explaining the motivation and need for this paradigm. Part 1 (Fundamentals) contains my favorite chapters of this book as you get a lot of knowledge about stream processing and why different academic and commercial projects and products emerged for stream processing – and how they differ. The end of part 1 gives an overview about academic systems such as TelegraphCQ, STREAM, Aurora and Borealis. Afterwards, commercial systems such as TIBCO BusinessEvents and Oracle CEP are discussed, before switching over to “real” stream processing frameworks and products: IBM InfoSphere Streams and TIBCO StreamBase as proprietary alternatives, and Twitter Storm (now Apache Storm) and Yahoo S4 as open source options.Part 2 (application development – data flow programming) discusses some basic concepts of stream processing such as flow composition (static, dynamic, nested), flow manipulation (operators, punctuations, windowing), modularity and extensibility. Part 3 discusses the architecture of a stream processing system and its applications. Part 4 goes into more detail discussing design principles and patterns for functional / non-functional topics and data processing / transformation. Part 5 describes three use cases from different verticals (general operations monitoring, healthcare and semiconductor).Altogether, you get a good overview about the stream processing paradigm, including history, basic concepts, design principles and use cases.VERY IBM-BIASEDThe book has a lot of great content. However, you should be aware that it is focused on IBM InfoSphere Streams and its programming language SPL. All screenshots and code examples (and there are a lot!) use these. That is absolutely legitimate as the authors were involved in creating this product / this language respectively its academic ancestors.If you want to or have to use another programming language, framework (such as Apache Storm) or product (such as TIBCO StreamBase), you can skip several parts of this book (all code examples; chapter about IBM InfoSphere Streams architecture; implementation of use cases; etc). Also, you should keep this in mind when reading the first part of the book, which compares different products.Nevertheless, the book is still worthy reading as you learn a lot about stream processing concepts in general.CRITICISMThere is only a few things to criticize. What I did not like:The book is written in a very academic style. When I wrote my degree dissertation, I had to use the same style. Not suited for a “business book”, in my opinion.The price for the book is very high (100 USD / 80 Euro).The book has over 500 pages, but a lot of it is source code, which is not needed or read by most readers, probably. If you want to / have to learn IBM InfoSphere Streams, you will probably do a training session with IBM coaches instead of trying to learn with this book (I doubt this would work as this is no training book). On the other side, if you will use another product instead of IBM’s, then you also do not care about the source code.CONCLUSIONThis book is not good for evaluation of different products as it is very IBM-biased. Nevertheless I really enjoyed reading the chapters about history, concepts and design patterns. I learned a lot about stream processing in general. As you do not have many options, if you want to buy a book about stream processing, my recommendation is to buy this one, even if you do not care about IBM’s product, but want to use another one such as TIBCO StreamBase.

Just received and I briefly flipped through this beautiful book. Wonderful color photos of Biblical places with a write up and maps. These write ups are not in depth but do give a sense of the artifacts of the time. There is a Notes section that directs the reader to more in depth information and a Scripture index but there is no index of specific places.Later ...After reading / reviewing half of this book so far, I have found numerous bits of information that help in my understanding of Biblical statements that before I had just glossed over. There is truly a reason why an event happened or happened in a specific place. Truly beneficial! The maps help me determine exactly where a specific Bible situation happened.

This book, written by a team of experts, does an outstanding job of explaining the relationship between WHERE a Biblical event happened and WHY it happened where it did. We had no idea of the importance of having an understanding of the geography of the Holy Land until we read this publication. For example, we did not know what the difference was between the feeding of the 5000 and the feeding of the 4000, and why those two events happened specifically where they did. This book clearly explains that and numerous other key events. It has wonderful archival and current photos, drawings and maps to enhance each description. It is written in an engaging manner and includes a detailed bibliography at the back if you want to further pursue a topic. We got so much out of this publication...well worth the investment!!

This is a 400 page book sold by Amazon for about $10.00 used.-A great book for AdultsIts small size makes it great for taking to a Bible study. It lists all the judges from Othniel to Samuel what they did how long they judged. The same is true for the kings of Israel and Judah. The rulers of assyria from Ashurnasirpal II (883-859) to Ashurbanipal II (669-627) are listed with what they did.I am VERY dyslexic spelling and knowing how to pronounce names is a real problem for me. Very informative book providing new perspective to help understand Old and New Testaments as a whole. It helps understand the New Testament in the context of Old Testament. Helped understand better that the Bible events did happen in specific time and location for specific reasons in His plan. Hallelujah! Highly recommend to everyone who loves God's words and who would like to find Jesus.

This volume includes plenty of maps and pictures (of places and archaeological artifacts as well) to give a good overview of the Bible. I would recommend this to someone who wants to get a good overview of things they can (and will) see in a trip to the Holy Land and the Middle East. Every page has something on it that makes it interesting to read (besides the text of that section). If someone wanted to just get a chronological overview of the Bible, I think this would be the one resource they would want.

This is an outstanding book that combines the story of the Bible with geography and pictures of the places where it happened, particularly noting that things happened where they did for a reason. This engaging book with maps, pictures and Scripture references is the next best thing to traveling with James Martin, one of the authors, through Israel, Jordan, Egypt and other Bible lands. The book helped me appreciate, relive, and share my travels.What an excellent resource for Sunday School teachers and for anyone who wants to understand the geography, culture and people of the Bible better! The story of God's plan of redemption shines clearly as connections are made among many Bible events that occurred in the same location over time.Highest praises for the authors, photographers and publisher.

Few people have the experience and insight with building peace that John Paul Lederach brings to the topic. Anything he writes is worth study. There are gems in this book but, that said, for the best introduction to Lederach, I recommend The Moral Imagination, a classic.

i found this book to be very interesting particularly for people who are interested in how conflicts influence identity. it does not only provide theoretical analysis but also provides a framework for action in order to build peace in communities affected by internal conflict that involves identity issues.

This book by John Paul is a very very useful discussion of peacebuilding and how peacebuilders can best engage in thier work. His use of graphics and diagrams makes complex theories accessible. When asked what to read about conflict and peace, this book is at the top of my recommended list. It is thoughtful, compact and applicable in many contexts. My unqualified recommendation!

This book is a must have for all peace practitioners and those who study peace and conflict. I have used it in numerous papers and have made my students read it for class.

I have no disappointment in the content of this product. However, I am anxious to digest the connection between materials here with the cultural dimension that has always seen my part of the world as 'developing' or 'underdeveloped' especially since most of the principles I am encountering are almost second nature to us.

I never say things like that but I am a trans woman, an older white lesbian in Brooklyn, and although Vivek Shraya's life differs in many ways from mine, I've underlined almost everything on the first page. I have to stop or I'll just mark up the whole book. You should read this book, it's not long and you'll learn things. Tegan and Sara said so, too.

This book is a gift. Beautifully written, tender, vulnerable, and honest. “I’m Afraid of Men” asks the reader to look in the mirror and reevaluate the way we ourselves interact with gender in our own lives and the way we treat others. This is a valuable and important work. Everyone should read it.

Vivek Shraya's I'm Afraid of Men is a short book, but it was a challenging one for me to read. It is very much a trauma narrative, and as a non-binary person who has experienced significant traumas and spent several years in therapy working through them, I found it incredibly painful to enter her frame of mind. Often when I read trans life writing, I feel less alone. This book, on the other hand, left me feeling as alienated and isolated and unacceptable and on edge as I did years ago.Shraya is a strong woman who has survived and accomplished many remarkable things. From this book, it doesn't seem like she acknowledges her own resilience. I hope she can find some peace someday.

Why? Because Vivek Shraya bares her soul-- as she writes with a soul searing intensity, delicacy, sensitivity, and beauty. This book is totally UNLIKE any other of the (sterling! excellent as well) books on being Gay or being on the Binary or being Trans, because Vivek Shraya incorporates the reader into her incredible journey of self-realization, doubt, fear, the agony of trying to "fit in" while all the while fueling her life and development with positive (and at times hesitant or self doubting) determination and love. What an incredible journey!! Vivek has a very logical head on her shoulders, and when she writes about being cheated on.... it brought back my memories but opened my eyes -- her words educated me on the power of logical forgiveness.Although this book does not really mirror my self-development in personal matters of gender, it does open up a incredibly abstruse, emotional and logical world where I can truly say "Thank you Vivek for enlightening me!" Her musings on the abysmal way we diminish and desecrate the feminine -- and the need to return of the goddess and (for both genders) to be respectful of space and the sacredness of the land we inhabit is a gentle eye-opener. There is MUCH to learn from this small but mighty book.By the Way -- Vivek's Music is BEAUTIFUL.

This is Shraya’s statement of what her experiences of dealing with men have been like. As a trans woman, she has, as the song says, ‘looked at life from both sides now’. As a boy, she was encouraged to be more male. She did body building, lowered her voice, and mimicked the walk of masculine men. She gave up color in her wardrobe, sticking to dark neutrals. Later in life she gave up trying to be what she was not, and started expressing her femininity. Now, instead of being harassed for not being masculine enough, she gets harassed for not being feminine enough. The world- and men in particular- just cannot deal with people like her. The majority of men (and women) want women and men to be firmly at the poles of the male/female spectrum, and so find themselves uncomfortable- and sometimes violent- in the presence of a trans or gender fluid person. This is an essential book for the 21st century, as we learn to view the world as non-binary.

I've not forgotten the jolt of pleasure I discovered in reading Jennifer Finney Boylan's memoir SHE'S NOT THERE on a plane ride from Vancouver to Toronto in 2003 when the book was published. Boylan's book was beautifully written —the work of a gifted novelist, to be sure—as well as honest, informative, and poignant. More than that, as a memoir of trans identity, it leapt off the page in a way that was immediately current and accessible in its contemporary modernity.My experience of reading Vivek Shraya's I'M AFRAID OF MEN this week was remarkably similar, and again I recognized a voice that was unreservedly modern, and magnificently of its time, and a book that is destined to take its place among the classics of trans memoirs.Shraya, herself a gifted novelist and poet, uses language lushly and evocatively, the way a poet would, but with also with a surgical precision that bypasses sentimentality in the service of truth. Not only "her truth," but also universal truths about gender socialization, loneliness, and the terrible sacrifice of suppressing essential parts of oneself in the service of not only social acceptability but, literally, the safety of life and limb. For me, the most searing parts of the book dealt with not only her documentation of her coerced suppression of her femininity, but also her joyful reclamation of it in later life. The euphoria of reading the story of a modern trans life—encompassing everything that a trans life can contain in the 21st century—rendered so beautifully in prose was a joyful experience for me as a reader.The title of her book may be I'M AFRAID OF MEN, but this is the work of a fearless author who is not afraid to expose herself on the page, on her own terms. It's also a warm and generous invitation to everyone, regardless of their gender identity or expression, to truly learn something new, and to open their minds and hearts to the marvellously complex realities of what gender can mean.The fact that the book has been so well received internationally, including by people who were perhaps not the initial target audience, is a testament to Shraya's courage, as well as her prodigious literary gifts. It's a slim volume, not much longer than some poetry books, but every word is golden. If you purchase one nonfiction book this year on the topic of sex and gender and society, this should probably be the one you buy. You'll actually be richer once you've done so.

Shraya asserts that "terror" is often sparked by observed gender non-conformity. As she has frequently been the object of such terror, it is difficult to deny her truth. It seems like he is using these last few books not to please the Artemis fans but more to stand on a soap box about saving the environment, and to express just how repugnant he finds the average human being on this polluted earth. Those who have been faithfully following this series will know that this is book six of the adventures of the teenaged criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl II.Picking up at Fowl Manor, we learn that three years have passed while Artemis was otherwise occupied, and that he now has two brothers, twins named Beckett and Myles. This book goes in a different direction to the previous plot, making no mention of some of the characters introduced in The Lost Colony. There are references to certain events, but other than the main characters, most of the story is new material.As the title implies, an older and more mature Artemis Fowl enlists the help of his friend Captain Holly Short, dwarf Mulch Diggums and the imp warlock No.1 to journey to the past to correct a mistake he made earlier in his eventful life. His mother has contracted a rare disease that can only be cured by an extract from the brain of an extinct lemur, and ironically, the extinction was hastened by young Fowl himself.The time trip gets very complicated when Artemis matches wits with his younger self, and rescuing the lemur from Dr. Damon Kronski, leader of the Extinctionists cult, proves to be much easier planned than achieved. To make it more complicated, there's now a fledgling romantic situation in play, and the return of an enemy from the past who also wants possession of the lemur.Artemis isn't as devious and diabolical as in earlier books, but to his credit, the kid is growing up and has other things on his mind. This book is action-packed with the usual gadgetry and humor, but as is the case with time paradoxes, it is sometimes hard to keep things straight. The plot also has several twists, obviously getting even twistier in the final chapters. The story ends with an obvious hint for another book.And "What about the Kraken?" you may ask. The Time Paradox starts off when Artemis returning home 3 years later. He now has 2 little brothers and he's growing up. This book is action packed the entire way, there's no rest at all in this book. It also seems to have the beginnings of a romance between Artemis and Holly. Artemis isn't the "bad guy" of the previous books. The plot of this book is Artemis must go back in time to save a Lemur and he has to face his younger self. It's very complicated at times and hard to follow. This book also is a bit on the disturbing side when it comes to the Extincionists. These guys are messed up. The budding romance between Holly and Artemis is a bit odd considering she's an adult and he's a teen. I'm curious how this will work out and be moraly right at the same time (although they are 2 different species....hmmm). An reintroduction of a old enemy is here too. The ending of this book leaves it open for another afterwards and frankly if this is the end, it's upsetting.All in all, an excellent book in the Artemis Fowl series, ideal for kids and adults.

(SPOILERS)Another fast-paced Artemis book that was a lot of fun to read in a weekend. Like others who wrote in, I missed Butler and Minerva but didn't find her absence such a mystery at this point. They are, after all, both teenagers and should develop other relationships along what will hopefully be an on-again-off-again relationship throughout future storylines. Instead, I found the Holly & Artemis momentary romance to be endearing and humorous. I worry, though, about Artemis' developing character. Others commented on his not quite being his mastermind self and until the end of the book that is certainly true. I don't think any reader wants Artemis to be "nice". He walks a line that makes him interesting and dangerous and because his inner core really wants to do the right thing, it makes him likable despite himself. Some of that got lost in this edition. Overall, though, it's just another really entertaining and enjoyable sequel that makes me want to read what's next!

My 11-yo son and I both really enjoyed the Artemis Fowl series, but this book was a major letdown. Time travel is difficult to get right, and Colfer missed the mark. The character development in the book is lame, and the story has more holes than a piece of Swiss cheese.My son didn't make it through the book, and I will certainly not read it a second time. Too bad, I really like Artemis, Holly, Foaly, Mulch and the Butlers, and was hoping to hang out with them for a few more books.

In Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox, Eoin Colfer continues the adventures started in the original Artemis Fowl. This time Artemis must return to the past to stop himself from destroying the last lemur that held the key to curing his mother.When Artemis was 10, he sold this lemur to a group of extinctionists. Now the only thing that will cure his mother is in the brain of that lemur.In an action packed volume, Eoin Colfer pumps up the intensity in the series. The plot moves at a perfect pace and if you understand paradox you can figure out that it sets up more than book six.I highly recommend this book for anyone who has read and enjoyed the other titles in the series.

This book is pretty good and won't likely dissapoint Artemis Fowl fans. It has the usual entertaining elements of the other stories in the series. But for fans of Nathanial Parker, who identified heavily with the characters in part created by his superb narrating abilities, it will be an adjustment. It's not that Enn Reitell is not a great story teller, he really did a servicable job. BUT, I never could get used to the incongruity of the new voices of Butler or Foley in particular. He did a great Mulch. So all in all, not our favorite in the series but well worth the read or listen. I hope Nathanial Parker returns for future Fowl books.

Here we are again, talking about Boom’s release of Power Ranger comics made by their predecessors. As I did in my earlier review for Volume 1, I’ll separate the contributions from those who created the comics (Image, Valiant/Acclaim at the time, and Papercutz this time around) and the company who put them together for this collection (Boom).This time, I’ll start with the companies behind the older comics (I hesitate to say “older companies” since, if you trust Wikipedia, Papercutz and Boom were founded in the same year). Like Volume 1, the comics aren’t as good as Boom’s own books but they’re still fun to read. The Turbo issues and Papercutz comics were, like Hamilton and Marvel before them, basically printed TV episodes, not adding anything new to their respective series other than new adventures. That said, they’re still very fun with interesting stories. They harken back to the early Hamilton comics by only including one story per issue (Ninja Rangers from Volume 1 doesn’t count; those were half stories, the “V.R. Troopers” just weren’t printed) and outshine the later Hamilton and Marvel stories at least partially because of that. The monster designs are better as well and still taking advantage of the fact that they weren’t featured in Super Sentai (the Japanese show Power Rangers came from). That said, when reading the 2nd Turbo story, “Simple Simon Says”, know that you’re not going crazy: either the writer or the artist (or both) were not aware who was what Ranger. It’s crazy, that’s all I can say about it. The 2nd Megaforce issue “Broken World” has one similar “oopsie” compared “Simple Simon Says’” many.I want to give the Zeo issue its own paragraph, as it was truly the best issue of either volume of the MMPR Archive series and possibly the closest another comic company comes to being as good as Boom. Great action but also a fun and nuanced look in the Rangers’ private lives, one of the reasons I love Boom’s comics. Other than the overly muscled Rangers, the art’s fabulous and the best of any pre-Boom work. It gets major points by matching the TV series’ look (save for a green Zordon; it’s a minor thing if you’ve read the older comics) and the colors look great, almost painterly with how it’s done. It’s a shame Image didn’t have the license to continue the story they started here, but the story reads great on its own and is the jewel in Power Rangers comic book crown... at least as far as pre-2016 comics are concerned.Which leads to Boom and their work putting this collection together. As before, it’s clear Boom couldn’t/wasn’t comfortable putting in the level of restoration Marvel and DC does for their collections. However, it’s also clear the Boom DID put effort in making these comics look better and did more than just scan the comics (with something I’m sure is beyond what a fan might have access too) and compile them in the book. I am slightly disappointed with the quality of the Papercutz comics as I figured, being relatively recent comics, Papercutz might still have had the digital files and Boom could’ve just copied them into this collection. That said, they still look pretty good and, perhaps, in better shape than the other comics in this book.Unless I missed something, we DON’T have a repeat of the mess from Volume 1. In the earlier book, one comic had its pages out of order and one was missing its last page completely. Thankfully, no similar problems happened here (and I’ll take a moment to mention the two errors were fixed for Volume 1, at least for the Kindle and Comixology versions).Boom went the extra mile and compiled all the extra pages that were originally published in the older comics. Activity pages, letters from fans, and editor columns are all included here, including those from Volume 1’s Hamilton and Marvel issues. You could argue that Hamilton and Marvel’s extras should’ve been included in Volume 1, but that’s like complaining that you must eat chocolate cake to get pie; you’re still getting something wonderful at the end (substitute your two favorite treats to make that analogy apply to you :) ). I was not expecting those and it was a pleasant surprise.There’s another surprise and it’s not nearly as pleasant (the faux-pas referred to in the title). It regards what’s NOT included in this collection. Going by the omission of adaptations of the 1995 movie, V.R. Troopers and Masked Rider in Volume 1, I wasn’t expecting “Power Rangers Turbo vs Beetleborgs Metallix” to be in this volume. Disappointing, yes, but I’ll give Boom the benefit of the doubt and assume there were rights issues (either just by being separate from Power Rangers or that plus the fact it adapted a different Japanese series that Toei would want a separate fee for). The big surprise was that Papercutz Free Comic Book Day issue “By Bug... Betrayed” was also omitted. For the life of me, I don’t know WHY it wasn’t included since it clearly took place in the TV series’ continuity and had no characters outside Power Rangers. I was disappointed but I wasn’t annoyed.This is where the major problem I have with the book comes in... issue #1 of Boom’s own Mighty Morphin Power Rangers IS included in this volume. I love Boom’s Power Rangers comics and the comics in the MMPR Archive collection wish they were Boom quality. I truly enjoy reading issue #1... AFTER reading issue #0 and BEFORE issue #2 when I’m reading the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Vol. 1 collection. Now, I already have the original “By Bug... Betrayed” before it got taken off Comixology so I was going to end up with two copies of a comic anyway. That’s not the point: the Archive collection is supposed to be for older, non-Boom comics that haven’t been available in print for years and none of Boom’s comics match that description: they’re easily available and clearly can’t be non-Boom comics if they’re from Boom.With that said, I’ll calm down and give Boom the benefit of the doubt (although I’m being generous) and assume there was some trouble with including “By Bug... Betrayed.” The ONLY thing I can think of, and this goes hand in hand with how I THINK these comics were remastered and put into the Archive, is a problem dating back to a problem with “By Bug... Betrayed’s” original publication. When it was published in 2014 as a physical book on Free Comic Book Day, there was a panel where the villainized Radbug (long story, not the point) hits Trini, with an impact star and a word balloon for Trini saying, “Ow, my leg!” She was barely hit, it’s nothing visible, and nothing more is made of the hit, but there was negative fan reaction as Trini’s original actress was killed in a car accident. When the comic came out digitally, the panel was changed to Kimberly barely escaping getting hit. The new version never got a physical release or included in another collection. My thinking is that Boom only had access to the physical books and, for whatever reason, couldn’t get access to Papercutz’s files. With that limitation, I assume they were worried about courting the same controversy and just substituted their comic.I’ll also say this: Boom wasn’t acting maliciously and, with whatever their reason for not including “By Bug... Betrayed,” just wanted to give readers 23 more pages of comics. I’ll also give them credit for not reprinting issue #0 again. It’s another good issue, but it has already been reprinted in Saban’s Power Rangers: Aftershock (the follow-up comic to the 2017 movie) and Soul of the Dragon (the one referred to jokingly as “Old Man Tommy”). It’s a slim silver lining but in today’s world, I’ll look for and take what I can get.Ultimately, it’s only 23 pages out of a roughly 460-page book. The remastering could’ve been way better but it’s decent, the comics themselves are fun and better than those in Volume 1 in both story and art, there are no hiccups within the comics included in the collection, and there’s bonus pages I don’t think anyone was expecting. Don’t let my score fool you, “By Bug... Betrayed” being replaced by Boom’s issue #1 is a huge problem for me and while I doubt it’ll happen, I hope Boom will add “By Bug... Betrayed” to an updated version of this book or add it to a future Lost Chronicles volume. I just won’t let it detract from an otherwise decent collection.

This book looks good. Sadly there's still a few select comics that I thought would make it on here but didnt. But there's also comics I didn't even know existed in this book. The Zeo #1 book from Image before they lost the license, 2 Turbo comics from Acclaim/Valiant (not the vs. Beetleborgs book sadly), and all of the Papercutz comics (except for the FCBD issue) which covers MMPR, Samurai, and Megaforce.I'd love to see a Vol 3 since I know there's still comics from the archives out there though I doubt this will be made.

If you're a fan of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, then I recommend this. The volumes are a collection of the 90's comic books turned into a graphic novel complete with the old school artwork. I already have volume 1 and was looking forward to volume 2 to complete my collection. It has the old school comics including published fan letters from the 90's. Also at the end of this collection is #1 of the new MMPR comic as well as advertisements for the new comic series.
