A gradual introduction to programming in the "objects first" tradition. The BlueJ IDE is a remarkable piece of work in its own right, and this text makes full use of all its features. Even better, you can continue using BlueJ long after you've finished the book ... it's not just a throwaway piece of pedagogy, but a valuable TDD tool for life.The authors cover a wide spectrum of programming approaches, always guiding the student gently toward the goal.It moves a bit slowly for my taste, but students these days aren't comfortable with hard work so it's probably a better fit.

The very first programming book I read when I started trying to learn for real. Love the IDE it works with (written for middle-schoolers), love the textbook (written by authors who decided middle-schoolers needed their own IDE). It, and the visual IDE it works with, did a great job helping me learn to think object-orientedly before I ever wrote a "Hello World." There's so much visual feedback that helps you see initialization & garbage collection, state scope, etc. And the book follows a great program!We didn't follow it in my 1st class (it was a suggested extra), but I was so glad I got a few chapters in before we started on our more procedurally-oriented Java book. I was way ahead of my classmates when we started covering static vs. object code.

All too rare is a book such as this. There are the Tate books (e.g., Bitter Java,Beyond Java), which claim the Oracle/Sun's sky is falling (not that Tate is wrong about Ruby being a great language that points to a better future, but Java isn't as worthless/sour-grapes-ish as his books can suggest). And there are the ordinary either gimmicky or technocratic textbooks that somehow always unnecessarily obfuscate the relationships between Object-Orientated Programming principles and syntax (e.g., Java in 60 Minutes A Day,Java How to Program (early objects) (9th Edition) (Deitel)). But this one is in its own league because of its balanced and graduated presentation of OOP principles and Java syntax, making it one of the easiest books from which to learn not only Java syntax but also how such syntax is governed by specific OOP principles.For example, in Chapter 7 the OOP principles of cohesion and coupling are illustrated using a sample program, which in this case is a Zork-like game. So these otherwise abstract concepts have been tied into the design of a set of meaningful classes/objects/Java syntax that are relatively easy to grasp because they have somehow been made almost tangible.These comments would not be complete without mentioning BlueJ, which is what draws most people to this book to begin with. BlueJ is a relatively simple IDE (compared to Netbeans, for instance) that extends the JAVA CLI (command-line interface) to make it feel more like modern LABVIEW or MATLAB's SIMULINK by letting one program Java through interaction with a UML(Unified Modelling Language)-type Class diagram. To some extent BlueJ makes interacting with Java more dynamic (more like the feel of Python and Ruby). For learning purposes it's fantastic (literally cuts learning time by a factor approaching 10), for professional purposes one can only hope that Oracle/Sun will give Java a BlueJ makeover.

Had to get this book for programming course and is an extremely easy read. The only down side I had was I bought this used acceptable and it had lots of used stickers on the back and side of book. But besides that this book was a great read with examples and definitions very helpful in my course.

Not all intro Java books are created equal, and this one is definitely worth the price.I've had formal education in 3 programming languages, and this book is by far the best one I've ever read. It's because the chapters walk you through the design, implementation, and refactoring of actual Java projects. Vocabulary and concepts are taught in the process, so you find yourself absorbing the facts by necessity.The book comes with an application called BlueJ, which models Java classes and object relationships. You can check your work against code samples on the CD as you complete the milestones of each project.If you learn by doing, and you need to learn Java and OO, this book is for you.

Great price for the book

Very easy to follow and makes concepts easy to understand, but rather boring and drab at times. I had to get it for my Java class.

Dry book not very interesting but gives you a decent understanding of what you need to know.

This series is about teenagers and their relationships; primarily focused on the high school environment and activities. The characters are very real and human. I would be surprised if anyone reading this could not find someone that they can relate to. The characters grow and we learn more about them in a consistent manner. In the 20+ books that I have read of this series, I have not noted any actions that seemed out of character based on the character development and story line. Characters have changed, but they have changed in ways that are logical and consistent with what the reader knows of them.Art: Is slightly better than average (3.5) I enjoy this series a great deal, but the art could be improved especially the faces.Relationship development: is Excellent (5) Although this series does move slowly, this means that the relationships develop as they would in real life. The shy girl doesn't get the guy by the end of the first book, friendships don't develop (or end) abruptly and for no reason, etc.Overall Story: Very Good (4). This is not my 'typical' genre of manga, but I did enjoy reading the books. My big complaint is that it seems to move so so slowly. It is about relationships - love, friendship, frenemies, and acquaintences. Sawaka agonizes for chapters over decisions. Since I do the same thing, I can't fault her, but at the same time, it does make the story move very slowly.Author's notes/extras: Not every author includes includes author's notes, however, Karuho Shiina has. I enjoy learning more about the person behind a book so I appreciate the extra effort that the author takes to tell us about herself.Will I re-read? Excellent (5). Yes, I will re-read this series. As a matter of fact, I DID. I read most of the books (the first time) on-line, but felt guilty that the author and publishing company were not benefiting. I then purchased the books and have found that the print version from the publisher is the better way (for me) to enjoy these books.Will I recommend? Very Good (4.5). If you enjoy this style of manga, I believe you will enjoy this series.

In volume 4 of Kimi Ni Todoke: From Me to You, Sawako finds herself at odds with another girl named Kurmi for the affections of the same boy-Kazehaya, the most popluar boy in school. When Kurmi's plan to use Sawako to gain Kazahaya for herself backfires She goes into a rage and reveals how she truly felt about Sawako and Kazehaya's friendship. This was an excellent story if you want to know what happened in the end then read volume 4 to find out!

I started out watching the anime for Kimi Ni Todoke online and I feel in with Sawako and Kazehaya. Their romance is sweet and teeming with awkward cuteness. The surrounding cast of characters is amazing. The only problem is that after awhile you begin to get frustrated with the lead couple because of their bumbling. However, it does ring true to life. Sometimes something is meant to be but it takes time. Suffice to say I am hooked. Hello, I started buying the Manga because I LOVED the show so much. That says something. I literally flew through the whole series super fast. Enjoy!!!

I absolutely adore this series! For those interested in a hilarious romantic comedy this is the series for you! You can't help but fall in love with all the characters.

I bought this for my husband who loves Kimi ni Todoke the TV series. He was so excited and even more excited when he read it and was enjoying it.

I finished reading this volume in one day the story is really developing the relationships between Sawako and Shota is really cute. all the characters in this manga are amazing and funny and you can't hate any character i really want to see how this story ends.

-Standard, basic information. Problem is the format, and the print and lack of proofreading. For instance, page 19 ends mid sentence. The missing information is important, essential. The recipes themselves are in smaller print, difficult to see because of the print size, font, and color of ink. And they are next to the binding, meaning the spine of the book has to be broken to be able to read the recipes. I will be returning the book because it's too difficult to read the information for me personally - (older eyes).

If you or someone in your family has recently been diagnosed with gluten or wheat issues and you are at the"Heck! What do I do now?" stage, or if you aren't a pro in the kitchen, this book would provide you with a good starting point .If you have lived with these food restrictions for a while, this probably isn't the cookbook for you. Several of the recipes are your basic "replace flour with gluten-free flour" or "replace pasta with gluten-free pasta" recipes. Kind of already knew to do that.

This book is Amazing! I love the time the author put into giving details on being gluten free. Not just recipes that are easy to follow and delicious but also how to shop, what to look for, even offering side choices when planning your meals. My daughter is NCGS but preparing dinners for a family of 6 when at least half of them are extremely picking can be overwhelming. This book has taking a lot of the anxiety out of my shopping and preparing meals for my entire family. Thank you Pamela Ellgen!!!

I recently started having health problems involving my G.I. tract that the doctors can't quite figure out; all testing has come back clean, even for Celiac, but eating gluten free seems to help ease my excruciating pain so I decided to order this book to help me learn a whole new way of cooking/ living..I just got it not long ago, so I've only made/ tried a few recipes so far but they're really yummy. The instructions are ready to understand and it makes it easy to know what ingredients you'll need and the time it'll take.I highly recommend!

I'm not sure what I was expecting as we are just dabbling with the possibility of going gluten free, but I was surprised at how many recipes were standard but swapped out typical gluten items for gluten free. I made a few of the others and they were great (especially the broccoli bacon salad!!)

Love it! only downside is the lack of pictures, and they kind of attempt to make the recipes healthy- for example the fish and chips were all baked and weren't that good until I fried them quick. But overall very pleased!!

Lots of great ideas. Pictures helped a lot.Fun and different.

Awesome cookbook plus includes nutritional info on each recipe which is great if you're diabetic only thing is wish it had pictures

A challenging read, but essential for understanding international law and its relationship to imperialism, both theoretically and historically. He makes an original and convincing argument that the legal form itself, the law, is directly and fundamentally implied by the existence of commodities. Not only that, but he argues that the ownership of commodities, in the final analysis, is based on the ability to use force to control that commodity, and that violence is fundamental to the legal form, both within and between states.Armed with this Marxist approach, he is able to explain why international law is law, despite the lack of an armed authority above the world's states to enforce it, which is a big theoretical dilemma that (bourgeois) political science majors and specialists in the field of International Relations (IR) have fruitlessly wrestled with for decades. He also explains why international law persists and why states continue to use it, despite the fact that it is routinely ignored by the dominant powers (the U.S., Israel, Russia, China, etc).The book closes with the historical development of international law and shows how it is connected with the creation of the world market beginning in the late 1400s and the rise of capitalism as the planet's dominant economic system which completely altered political structures, morals, and ideological norms as it subordinated everything to its logic.I plan on reading "Law and the Rise of Capitalism" by Madeleine Levy and Michael Tigar soon to help me understand this book.

His meandering and discursive though erudite analysis refers to and comments on an enormous smorgasbord of authors (there are some 26 pages of bibliography), but regrettably often without clear and systematic exposition of their theoretical positions - thus, to evaluate what is being said often requires good knowledge of the background literature being reviewed. The general reader might therefore quickly feel at a loss, if not put off altogether by abstract Marxist terminology. There are also not a few rhetorical assertions and metaphorical allusions. While one could agree that international law is often a formality flouted in practice or a justifying ideology, I for one am not persuaded by his argument - not just because I think the defended theory of the Russian Marxist Pashukanis (that a legal order is a reflection of commodity exchange) is flawed, but because a profound anthropological-historical perspective on law that one might expect from a Marxist is lacking, and because there is no profound discussion of the role of ethics in society. I therefore often find his claims more question-begging than anything else. The interested reader would be well-advised to read - if he has not already done so - Pashukanis's treatise on "law an Marxism" before attempting to wrestle with this book.

I don't think I have ever read a more valuable and interesting book. The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche offers inspiring teachings on how we might approach the prospect of death as a part of our spiritual path. He gives a contemporary discussion of The Tibetan Book of the Dead, while also giving a detailed exposition of the traditional teachings. Highly recommended.

I stumbled upon this book without having heard of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche although I have been reading and studying Buddhism for three decades passing from Suzuki, Chogyam Trungpa then through Sogyal Rinpoche in between and to the present. I have studied Buddhist text (in Chinese) in the original and read countless related books and monographs, but this book is truly special, especially for the somewhat initiated who is looking for something to tie everything together. While outwardly discussing the various bardo's of life and death, Rinpoche manages to unify theory and practice in such a clear and concise way, without trivializing even as he communicates deeper concepts and methods behind meditation practice, and elucidates Buddhist ideals. You must have a certain amount of background to appreciate the density of whats packed in these pages, but one can revisit certain sections as one's practice and insight advances. I did not read every section, leaving some out but concentrating on those that have more immediate relevance. If nothing else, the book reinvigorates one's awe for the mystery of life and death, and compared to the modern and superficial pseudo-intellectual stuff that is Lacan or Foucault for example, this is so authentically rich and intellectually satisfying to pour over. This book is no less than a most understated blessing for the woeful soul that is modern mankind.

Outstanding book with some vital information from Tibet: Everything you want to know about the path out, ie., death, but don't know who to ask. Ponlop is part of the new generation of lamas who understand the Western mind. For example, he ads this comment about a joke by Woody Allen: "I'm not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens" ---[that] "expresses our attitude toward death, and the prevailing message of our [Western] culture. The point here, however, is: do not be afraid of who you are in any moment, under any circumstances. That is the message of all the teachings of the buddhadharma, whether they are Hinayana, Mahayana or Vajrayana."[p.233] So this is also a book of life, what it means to be a Human Being with a consciousness that is evolving from ignorance to wisdom.Also, if you're familiar with the Tibetan Book of the Dead, this is a book you must read. Because it fleshes out those esoteric and poetic concepts. Thus it presents an understandable map as you transit to a new territory, ie., the transition from the Bardo of Life to the Bardo of Death and Rebirth.This book is a good companion to Anyen Rinpoche'sbook,.Dying with Confidence: A Tibetan Buddhist Guide to Preparing for Death

What a clear book. It takes the realizations of the great awakened masters and bring it down to be understood to the honest student of life and truth.

This book should be readed of as many people as possible.It is very clear to understand and treat a topic that I think anyone should be interested- the death or our Death!I think it is very important to find out and practice now, in this life, in this bardo what tyey say and advice us. It is a very ould teaching and that s why it is true.I liked the way the author presents the things as for normal people like us, though interested in spiritual matter.In my opinion it is also necessary to start to practice also.. but read it first, as well as other books about this huge subject. I am very glad I choose to buy it.

I found this a fascinating exploration. Not for the faint hearted. A blend between philosophy and practicality, gentle learning for all.

As I've grown older I have truly relished the eruption of Tibetan wisdom literature and commentaries "coming online", as it were. Having cut my teeth on D.T. Zusuki and Herbert Guenther, the appearance of Thurman, Garfield, and now Ponlop Ripoche has further deepened and matured my appreciation of the compassion that comes out of life to help us. Ripoche's work is, for me, a true mile/gem/stone. It is a truly reflective work that I can only compare, in my own meditative experience, to reading St. Agustine's Confession. There is genius in the economy of words, only outshined by their precision and communicative power. I have been graced with such great teachers who awakened and deepened my "reflective ear". As I read Ripoche's work each word, phrase and paragraph echos with insight inspiring power, congealing long threads of thought both Western and Eastern. I do apologize if this review seems like a fawning paean. What I wishing to convey is the deep meaning that is redolent within this work, and the opportunity for you, also, to take a plunge (if you already haven't). It is truly a unique work of great power and relevance. It is the best work to emerge, to date, for our Western lebenswelt that deals with the experience of death and beyond -- and by that our life, right now.

I have not enough accumulation of merit to physically meet, receive blessings or teachings from the Venerable Alak Zenkar Rinpoche until I read the forward from "Mind Beyond Death". I place my faith in Venerable Alak Zenkar Rinpoche's words that "this guide to the bardo is in invaluable". Many years ago, I was very fortunate to have met Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. Our paths never crossed again until the reading of "Mind Beyond Death". For me, the words expressed in this bardo guide is very simple and clear to understand, and I pray that these instructions for my "this life" will carry me through the realms of the bardo as described in "Mind Beyond Death". I know that we will all die and have confidence that this guide is all I need to help me through the transitions of what I will face.

The first review I read here was fairly negative: a re-tread of stories that have been told many times, by many people. If you are a serious fan, you will be disappointed. I groaned, because I've been excited for this book to come out.I started reading (with slightly lower expectations), and I'm glad to report that Review 2 on Amazon, was dead wrong!Ross comes across very humble, despite having truly "done it all". I espicially enjoyed the first third of the book, his background through UWF days. It was gritty stuff. A vivid description of a fascinating time. As an outsider, he earned his stripes. His passion for the business just oozes off the page. I will never tire of hearing Bill Watts stories. What a time. What a group of characters!Most of the chapters are light and breezy. He touches on all of the different roles, and companies he worked for. A few of the stories he told, I had heard before, but not through Jim's perspective. Everything felt fresh. He shines a spotlight on, and tells a single "really good" story about a few of the greats. Flair. Rhodes. and Vince. I've never heard them, and they are told masterfully.My only complaints, it was too short, & I wanted more. I'm selfish, I know. It was like seeing Billy Joel at the garden: fantastic performer, setlist, and show! But as you leave, you think, he didn't play "this" & how could he leave "that" out. Just too many hits, can't do them all. That's how I felt when finishing this books. I feel like this was just the tip of the iceberg. I would absolutely love, LOVE to see the announcement dates for Sloberknocker go!umes 2,3 and 4. I highly reccomend this to casual, and hardcore wrestling fans.

I love Jim Ross, I respect Jim Ross and, I could not wait to hear about his life in the business. At over 350 pages, this book was a good overview of a 25 year career in wrestling progressing from childhood, getting into the business in a non typical way, the territories, and the journey that made him a legend that he is today. The good news, this book was written by a person raised to love and protect himself and the business. The bad news, it was written by a person who loves and protects himself and the business. This book should have easily been a five or six volume set. Jim's story telling is second to none and I could easily listen to him or read his work for days on end. Sadly topics that was most interested in were glossed over, presented already by others or just missed completely. To be honest each territory/company needs its own volume. There is so much history that he was involved in that needs to be preserved for future Generations. More please Mr. Ross!

If you're looking for a light read, this book is for you. It gives an overview of his early life up through 1999. However, if you're looking for a detailed look into his life, this isn't it. The chapters are short and read more like blog entries.

I've always admired "Good Ol' JR." He was one of the best announcers in the business and provided vivid, information-packed commentary for every match he called. In this autobiography, I came to respect the man even more. On his way to the top, Jim Ross paid his dues as much as any wrestler, enduring a great many obstacles, setbacks, and frustrations. He wore many hats, metaphorically speaking, in the business, so he knows it inside and out. I found his opinions and observations about various events and personalities fascinating. I've been a wrestling fan since 1975 and was aware of 'kayfabe' long before its reveal to the public. Still, I learned a lot from this book, which reminded me of first becoming a fan all those years ago. On the personal side of things, Jim showed a lot of integrity in this book by accepting the blame for the problems in his first two marriages. He's proud of his accomplishments, but they are presented with a touch of humility and appreciation. For any fan of professional wrestling, or for anyone who has had to struggle to get ahead, this book is for you.

One of very few books I have found myself enthralled in enough to read cover-to-cover in one sitting. A very interesting read, and worthy of attention for wrestling fans. The writing voice is not so clean and polished that it comes off as a ghost-written work. It really does feel like a friend telling his friends about his past. Additionally, I learned a few things I did not know despite having been a fan for more than 25 years. Well worth the cost, well worth the time, no regrets whatsoever. If there is a criticism to be had, it's that on the last page it didn't say "To be continued".

Any wrestling fan will love this book as you get the life story from one of the greatest announcers in the business just the way it happened. I personally loved reading about what made Ross tick and all his experiences in the business in the different territories and how he got to where he is today. The book also tugs at your heartstrings too as his greatest fan and the love of his life his wife Jan died earlier this year before the book came out.Just a good read if you want the ins and outs and the all about the real life the wrestlers had behind the scenes.

JR has logged over 40 years in wrestling announcing and management. So I assumed that this book would be chock full of behind the scenes stories of the wrestling business. And the wacky ribs the wrestlers pull on each other. And there were a couple laugh out loud stories in here. But most of the time Jim is long winded and uninteresting. And then the book ends in 1999. Almost twenty years ago. Why? He didn't end his career then,why stop there? A sequel? No thanks. I won't buy it. I'll wait until it hits the library. I couldn't wait to buy this one,but it left me disappointed. As JR would say, you'd be a crazy as a pet coon to buy this one
