When I helped my church convert their accounting system a few years ago, I was surprised how few resources there were to explain how church accounting works. This led to the first book of The Accountant Beside You series, QuickBooks for Churches and Other Religious Organizations. Now, less than three years later, there are four books in the series helping over 10,000 organizations. As time moves on, so does technology. More and more organizations want the convenience of an internet-based accounting system. I'm Lisa London, and alongside CPA Eulica Kimber, we'll be The Accountant Beside You guiding you through the process of setting up QuickBooks Online and maintaining a streamlined accounting process for your nonprofit or church. As a CPA for several decades, I have helped many small, medium-sized, and start-up companies establish accounting systems to streamline their businesses. As a person who finds it hard to turn down requests from organizations I volunteer with, I have served on boards of various nonprofits, on the audit committees for several churches, and as church treasurer. I am treasurer of a small church, have an accounting background, and I have used quite a few different accounting software packages. While this book is fairly good, it is not updated for the current QuickBooks Online design which means you have to read the instructions in the book and then try to "translate" that into what you're actually seeing on the screen which may not be exactly as described in the book. So, the book may say "click on this button," but that button may no longer exist in the program, so you have to go looking for the new alternative. If this was just in one or two places, I wouldn't think twice about it, but it's pretty pervasive. The benefit of the book is that it does save you from having to figure out for yourself how to use QO for a non-profit (church). So, someone with some accounting and accounting software experience will probably be able to use this book successfully, but I am not sure someone without that background will be able to use this as well.
There ar not enough good books out there that really provide the tools to really help a non profit setup and maneuver through the complexities of quickbooks. It is frustrating to purchase books only to find out they don’t quite help you get the job done. This book is quite helpful, simple and an easy read for someone who does not have an accounting background.
I have found this book to be very helpful in organizing our non-profit. It will be helpful for the novice and business person that wishes to work the books in a non-profit. Helpful for the novice because it is simple to follow and gives ideas and reasons for good controls. The business person will learn the differences between business accounting and non-profits. Plus it is well laid out and easy to read. Thank you for this wonderful book, it is a real timesaver.
Very helpful, at first glance. Huge problem is that QBO updates constantly, so using a how-to book that is almost new is still out of date (screens depicted in book no longer match what you see on your monitor). That said, it's the best I've found for moving from old church software to QBO.
Detailed and informative about how to adjust QuickBooks for non profit. If a little dated. QuickBooks changes the online setup from time to time.
Don't even think about working with QuickBooks online for nonprofits without this book. This is especially true if you are setting up QuickBooks for the first time, transferring from the desktop version to the online version, or just generally new to using QuickBooks online for a nonprofit or church. I have the Kindle edition, so that I can open the book on the same computer I'm using for QuickBooks. The book isn't perfect, but it's indispensable. Some sections require re-reading more than once to understand. It would have been helpful if the authors walked the reader through some more examples. Combining the book with Google searches for specific QuickBooks questions helps a lot. Be sure to pay attention to the blue banners in the text... They contain critical information.
This book exceeded my expectations. It is my new "go to" reference guide for QBO. You will not be disappointed.
