Some of the moving toys in the Howes's book, such as jumping figures and bobbing birds, are constructed much like puppets, but this book also includes carousels, pinwheels, and a very clever little theater with magnetic characters. Maskwork combines historical information about ethnic masks that children can make for their own performances, with performance and staging tips included. London lecturer Currell, with five books to his credit, marshalls his expertise into both the how-to-fashion figures and staging information, including plenty of colorful professional puppets to gaze upon. The problem, then, lies not so much in the data but in their presentation. Drawings are usually not full-scale. The writing is unusually stilted. And no true projects or patterns exist; instead, the focus is on generic methods (foam rubber versus wood sculpting, for instance) and on universal techniques (control and manipulation, construction, and the like) to educate puppeteers in the broadest perspective possible. This book tells the reader how to build almost any type of puppet there is, and has fine photos of different puppets.
The scope of this instructional textbook ranges from puppet craftsmanship to the technical aspects of production. Essentially, readers will be prepared to consider all pertinent aspects of the puppet making and puppetory theater production processes, and thereby will avoid many mistakes along the way by reading this helpful book.If you do judge a book by its cover and appearance to some extent - like this reviewer - you won't be disappointed. The pictures used are exquisite, and will assuredly pique the interests of the interested even further. Aesthetically, this work is quite pleasing.While the intended scope of this book wasn't fine art criticism and appreciation, it wouldn't have hurt to have included some of each. The photos of puppetory productions used point conclusively to an author who has likely mastered these loftier concepts. To close the circle, some commentary about why certain productions have excelled would have been welcomed, as opposed to discussing only technical pitfalls. Unlike presentational theater, puppetry is far more technical in nature, but it is a fine art medium also and more of its practitioners should have the initiative to promote it as such.One of the best primers currently available, but it begs for a new edition.
