Amazon.com Review

The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time," according to author Rick Warren, the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, touted as one of the nation largest congregations. Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. Nonetheless, this is probably an excellent resource for devout Christians who crave a jumpstart back to worshipfulness. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly

Pastor of Saddleback Church, a Southern Baptist mega-church in southern California with weekly attendance of more than 15,000, Warren now applies his highly successful "purpose-driven" framework, developed in the best-seller The Purpose-Driven Church, to individual experience. The same principles Warren has taught to thousands of pastors to help churches be healthy and effective can also drive lives, he says. The book argues that discerning and living five God-ordained purposes-worship, community, discipleship, ministry and evangelism-is key to effective living. His 40 short chapters are intended to be read over 40 days' time, giving readers small pieces of his purpose-discovering program to chew on. Warren certainly knows his Bible. Of 800-plus footnotes, only 18 don't refer to Christian Scripture. He deliberately works with 15 different Bible translations, leaning heavily on contemporary translations and paraphrases, as an interesting way of plumbing biblical text. The almost exclusively biblical frame of reference stakes out the audience niche for this manual for Christian living. It's practical yet paradoxically abstract, lacking the kind of real-life examples and stories that life-application books usually provide in abundance. The book has flaws editing might have fixed. People are quoted without being identified, and subheads simply repeat lines of text, which tends to make the prose sound too simple. This book is not for all, but for those needing a certain kind of scriptural rock, it is solid.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I waited until I could get this book for under a dollar (already having a purpose in life) and I must say it was worth every cent. I really can't give a book a one star review if I can honestly agree that if a person did everything this book says to do, his/her life would be significantly better. It's the way Rick Warren goes about it that made me roll my eyes while I was reading. All the scripture taken out of context with weird sounding paraphrase "translations" all over the place used to illustrate what most any Christian should learn during the course of going to church and reading the Bible. Isn't is possible to create a book encouraging Christians to live purposeful lives without putting fifteen different versions of the scriptures through a shredder and then blowing the shreds over three hundred pages of ra ra feel-good-about-yourself stuff that reads like a lot of different sermons strung together to make a book?Still, I can't help but agree with what Rick Warren has to say. And, I'll admit I appreciated chapter 13 on worship. I think he was especially "right on" in that chapter. What put me off right from the get-go, however, was Warren's tendency to take specific scriptures directed at particular people and places and generalize them. A classic example being on page 23, where Warren takes Psalm 139:16 "You saw me before I was born and scheduled every day of my life..." and generalizes it to apply to the reader. Where does he get a license to do that? Is it possible that simply because David said that about his relationship with God it doesn't follow that it applies to everyone who ever lived?"Because God made you for a reason, he also decided when you would be born and how long you would live." OK, since it's decide in advance, I suppose I can give up that exercising and start smoking and drinking, but then I suppose God would have planned that in advance too?I don't want to retype all of page 23 into this review, but this is what soured my entire view of this book before it even started. Did Paul really mean, in Acts 17:26 (sermon on Mars Hill), that God planned where I personally would be born? That's a bit of a stretch, and in my opinion a gratuitous and sophomoric generalization of a scripture aimed a certain people at a certain time for a certain purpose. That's actually rather funny. Rick Warren believes in purpose driven lives, but he doesn't seem to believe in purpose driven scripture! He can use any paraphrase of any scripture he wants for any purpose he wants! Now, someone out there please write "The Scripture Driven Book About the Purpose of your Life".

This is a book is written by Rick Warren that gives you false hope in your salvation. No where in this book does Rick talk about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Jesus had not risen from the dead then He would be no different than the others who claim to be god. John 14:6 Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life and no one comes to the Father except thru Me.

I won't give away any of the 40 day lessons, but I will say it's a great bible study and bonding experience and unravels many of the mysteries that hold us back from feeling joy, from being able to sustain meaningful relationships ... it's a great guide to embracing our purpose, feeling God's love and making meaningful connections. I mentioned this book in my women's ABF (a large group) and the majority were nodding their heads and singing it's praises. It's a great book for mentoring people new to the faith.

This book is very uplifting and thought provoking. Used in a teens class and nice to have just a few pages to read each day. I do disagree with a few things mentioned but feel like the encouragement and focus made the book worth a study. In fact, hearing other views than mine on certain beliefs caused me to study more on those topics. He does mention and I noticed early on that Mr. Warren uses some very liberal versions of the Bible from which he quotes. Some quotes when looked up weren’t at all what the scripture said. Some of the quotes were a real reach to fit his view. That’s why God expects us to study for ourselves!

Rick Warren is a man after Gods heart. His insights have helped me greatly over the past several years. He has a way of bringing today's issues out in the open and speaking frankly and lovingly from a biblical perspective. His voice is much needed during these times. I've been through this devotional before, when I first became a Christian. Now, I'm reading it with my 15 year old daughter every morning. This book has value beyond what I can describe.I doubt you would miss the money spent on it. To be honest, I have purchased multiple copies over the years and passed them out. I'd say they were worth every penny and then some.

This was the best $10 I've ever spent!! This book has truly deepened my faith and helped me grow spirtitually. The scriptures are number one, but this book is number 2 for me. Im learning so much, and it's helping my faith tremendously. It has changed my attitude about church and about fellowship and also about how to better use my TIME! I CANT thank Rick Warren enough for this great book.
