Told through Lara's, her sister Sydney's, Bree and her brother Liam's points of view BACKLASH is a cautionary tale about online bullying and it's unintended consequences.Sarah Darer Littman brilliantly crafted a timely story that will appeal to both teens and tweens drawing upon some recent stories that have made the news. Each of the narrators had positive and negative traits and multiple layers. Liam was my favorite character, wise beyond his years. The parents had fewer dimensions. The mothers were integral to their daughters' issues, while the fathers were more supportive and nurturing. Despite Bree's meanness, I could see how she came to be that way.THEMES: bullying, depression, suicide, mental illness, parent, siblings, familiesBACKLASH should be required reading for parents and kids before they're allowed to touch social media.
Backlash is amazing. Littman is an excellent author with a talent for writing from multiple perspectives while still maintaining a focused plot. The bullying is horrible and surprising (you'll see why). Littman delicately handles the issue of bullying, showing the truth of its ugly face and how responsibility comes with it. It's hard to say much more without giving things away, but I can say that I enjoyed the characters; they were well developed and all of them play an important role in Lara's situation. I also appreciate seeing the character growth. As a bonus, we have Sydney, Lara's younger sister--everyone needs a friend like Sydney. The one fault I found was Liam's perspective: his POV sounded like Lara's sister; I couldn't tell it was a boy, so a more clear distinction in voice would be helpful. But the novel more than makes up for that small flaw by not downplaying this serious issue and threading the actions through a moral code.
This is an excellent book that I think not only young adults could take something from, but adults as well. Backlash is the perfect title! Very harsh story definitely suggest to older than 16 but not for 15 or younger it’s very on point and not the best stuff to put in a young teens mind

Great!!! Ideal for young girls with use of social media.
Read it. You'll love it. A page turner and an eye opener. Great way to start discussions with your kids about "finstagrams" and why social media can be dangerous if not done with care.
An easy read. Lots of dialogue. Good book for young people as a lesson about bullying and the bad side of social media.
