My grand-daughter chose this book for me to read to her during a sleep-over, and what a treat was in store for both of us.Being told from the sea’s point of view was a masterful touch. The sea loved the little boy who came down to play and swim each day, and they soon struck up a friendship.But little boys eventually grow up and discover other things to do, so his visits to the sea became rarer. When he was in trouble, the boy remembered his friend the sea, and returned because he knew the sea would help him in his time of need.I won’t say anything further as I don’t want to spoil the story by giving away too much of the plot, but be assured this is a lovely story which would be suitable for both boys and girls. Highly recommended.
The Boy and the Sea, by Orna Gadish, is a poignant story with a beautiful message for growing children. It is also a message for adults who feel a little down on their luck. It’s a story about abundance around us. It’s a message about what got us started in life, and what sustains us onward. The ending is a reminder that we never lose touch with who we really are.I have always believed that stories such as this, especially stories for children, need to contain a moral message. Such messages hidden or woven into the story line sink into the psyches of the young. The messages help children in their decision making processes as they grow and mature.The sea, the fish, sand castles, and other symbols, as well as the art, will appeal to the young and hold their attention. I can see this story becoming a favorite of children, read time and again.
The Boy and the Sea is an allegorical story about generosity and appreciation. The sea has a lot to offer the boy throughout his life, as he becomes a man, and is happy to give. This is the perfect book for parents to read out loud to their children, and ask if they learned anything...if not, as might be possible in younger kids, the parents can easily explain the message here. It's affirming for adults, too, and you can get through it in five minutes, though you'll probably think about it for some time after that. It's also a keeper. Not something you read once and give away.
I bought this book because a four year old grandson was visiting. He sat on my lap while we read the story of the boy and the sea. I explained to him that just like the sea missed the boy, I miss him when I don't get to see him very much. While the Tree represents something finite, which the boy completely destroys at the end, in his selfishness the Sea in Gadish’s inspirational story could very well represent the Divine.The spiritual element of the plot strengthens this message, as the use of ‘The Sea’ lends itself to the concept of an infinite or divine being. The boy (which could easily represent any of the readers) relies on this infinite being, and in doing so manages to have a long and fruitful life. Like us, the boy talks to his father, The Sea (The Divine) a bit too seldom. Like us, the boy, mostly goes to his friend, the Sea (Divine) only when he needs something… However, what the boy does, which many of us forget to do, is give thanks to the one that gave him everything. In the Sea’s final gift, the boy sees that within the Sea he is forever young… a symbolic reminder of heaven...Giving thanks and reliance on the Divine are the significant lessons of The Boy and the Sea, unlike the old classic, which condemns selfishness and greed.I believe that today's values and changing times place The Boy and the Sea on the higher shelf in every household library! This story is so touching and inspiring and has a beautiful message for kids and adults alike. The sea, in my opinion, resembles parents, or a loved ones who help and love you unconditionally. I felt sad for the sea, though, as I believe some kids or adults forget to be grateful and considerate to our loved ones and some abandon them. The lesson here, I believe, is never to forget our loved ones, no matter what. But this story is a real treasure. It conceals underneath several lessons, or layers, like an onion, one can peel it, layer by layer. One can feel it. The other lesson, in my opinion, is to never forget who we really are, and where we come from. Lastly, life is busy and we get involved in our hectic work and chores, and forget to live life to the fullest and enjoy ourselves too. The story is pure inspiration, and one can peel the various layers hidden inside. It’s beautiful, artful, and poetic, and it passes through the heart and permeates down into the soul. Many lessons hide within the pages, and upon revelation, one is a little bit different, better, I think. It took me three reads to fully grasp the impact of the message. I would like to recommend it highly to adults and kids alike, as this one is really something special.
