I highly recommend this book about a Jewish family from Poland in 1939 describing their circuitous and challenging journey to freedom. Told through the eyes of teenage Tanya, she recounts many narrow and fateful escapes from the invading Nazis. In their trail they leave behind communities of Jews who were cruelly decimated and destroyed. Tanya's father's keen instincts kept them on the run while miraculously managing to navigate the family to safely. It is a tale of refugees using resourcefulness while adapting to enormous challenges and dramatic life-style changes. From a comfortable life in Nowy Sacz, Tanya and her family find themselves in desolate, icy and inhospitable Siberia –exiled as enemies of Russia. The journey of several thousand kilometers takes them through Tajikistan and Europe. The harrowing and dangerous journey culminates in relief and joy with their arrival and potential of building a new life in Israel. This account of holocaust survival is an informative and novel story – one that should be studied and read. It is inspiring, sensitively and beautifully written, immersing the reader in the horror of occupation, adventure, displacement and ultimately, the miracle of survival against all odds.

This is a beautifully written story about resilience and resourcefulness (and luck) in the face of war and desperation and disease. How a refugee family stayed together and survived against the odds as they fled from the Nazis and survived terrible hardships together, finally reconstituting their lives in Israel after the war. The story is narrated by the teenaged daughter of the family. I found myself becoming rather emotional at different points, especially at how they managed to commemorate Passover in the face of extreme deprivation in Siberia. A great read!

I have been through a lot in my life, especially as a teenager. When I heard from a friend about this book I decided to give it a go. It exceeded my expectation on every way. I really connected with Tanya and everything she had to deal with. Being a true story, I felt uplifted and gifted to be living in such wonderful times and yet admire and feel inspired by those who had to live through WW2. Good read!

A very moving story based on true facts telling of one girls life growing up in Europe during the second world War, her experiences, feelings, fears and finally arriving in Israel. A true life history lesson.

Definitely a good read. A compelling true story that casts light on a rarely-described aspect of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of a young women fleeing further and further east as the Holocaust encroaches. Recommended for Young Adults and upwards.

I have read many books, fiction and non-fiction, about this era, and it never ceases to amaze me that I can still be surprised by unknown stories that have never been told. This is one of them. Truth is certainly stranger than fiction – and more interesting.

I've read a lot of books about the Holocaust and this one told a story I'd never heard before. It was well written and I felt like I got to know Tanya. I kept thinking about how life can change at any minute and how attitude and luck can determine our path.

We can never stop learning from stories about the Second World War and the cruelty not only of the Nazis, but of the Russians an even ordinary folk. This is an important story to tell.
