This book is an amazing parting gift George Carlin has left us. After decades of making us laugh with his wry insights into the human condition, Carlin pulls back the curtain and lets into his most intimate, unguarded moments. These are the moments that contributed to his outlook and his routines. And they make up an epiphany. Business troubles, drug troubles, heart troubles...it is amazing that Carlin was able to persevere through it all. And in this, his final book, he tells us what it was like first-hand, warts and all. This is not a compilation of his stand-up bits; there are plenty of those (and I'm not dismissing them - they are among my favorite books). Rather, this book is the culmination of nearly fifteen years of collaborative work with the fabulous Tony Hendra (of Father Joe fame) to document George's life in words. And, in so doing, to make us think - what else would you expect from a book by George Carlin?Hendra completed the book after Carlin's death, and his deft hand finished things up wonderfully. George Carlin blazed a trail with a few other rare talents (Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Bill Hicks are among the only to come to mind). We were fortunate to have had Carlin walking among us as long as he did. We are also fortunate to have this amazing posthumous work. Kudos to George Carlin, and to Tony Hendra, and to George's daughter Kelly for all she does.

I have been a fan of George Carlin since I was around 10 yrs old when I found my dad's 33rpm record of Occupation: Foole. I had no idea what it was at the time but the many pictures of George on the cover in various weird poses grabbed my curiosity. I was hooked and laughing hysterically after only the first side of the album. It is nice to read this book, written in a style that assures you that George wrote it. It is also a pleasant surprise to read that many of the life experiences George related about his past in various sketches were true. Such as growing up in a place called "Morningside Heights" and hanging around in a neighborhood called by it's slang name "White Harlem">It is also shocking to know how many bad experiences George had throughout his life, including ones during his most successful years in comedy, that he kept hidden from his fans. He, of course, relates all these in the George Carlin no-nonsense way he has related everything else in his life. With the wisdom George spout forth in his many comedy routines, it is a shame that 1) he died so early and 2) more people have not woken up and realized how smart he really was. Anyone who has followed George during their life will find this book extremely entertaining, insightful, shocking and funny (as George always was.)

As a fan from childhood, this man, and legend, became one of the voices that guided me throughout the years. Not blindly, I questioned it all, but it seemed his words resonated deeply within me and I was always fascinated by that. Now, as an adult and aspiring artist, I understand so much more than ever and powerfully moved by what he had to finally say...his last advice for me. I've learned so much and I'm certain all other fans will have the same astounding experience as I have had.

I sense the title of my review is something George Carlin would have scoffed at with a number of 4, 10 and 12 letter words, but it is as close as I can get to the feeling I got reading the book.Carlin is one of the funniest comedians and performers to ever live and even after 71 years, 23 albums and 13 HBO specials, it still feels like he was taken too soon. Carlin doesn't spare the details in the story of his life, from the father that left him, to his stormy marriage, drug dependancy or occasionally sacrificing of his own voice for the sake of getting a gig.To a certain extent, his stories of drug use, bottoming out and the like could be attributed to any major celebrity of the seventies and eighties, it is his honesty that makes it amazing. While by the end of his life, he was completely clean and sober, he attributes acid with helping find his voice, going so far to say, "it should be sold over the counter."He shows the evolution of his characters from Al Sleet to the angrier Carlin of the later career. Some observations, some characters, so just his own strange mind at work. He peels back the layers to show the genesis of his comedy and is honest with what did and didn't work.He is also honest about his failings and his hypocrisy in life. The self awareness he had is particularly refreshing in light of some of his critics.Best of all though, its one final chance to hear Carlin in his own voice for one last time. He doesn't disappoint. While it isn't a comedy book, there are a lot of laughs to be had. If you are a fan, you won't be disappointed.

In my opinion, George Carlin was and will always be a comedy genius.George does not make any apologies for his drug use, alcohol use, or any other abuses, nor does he glamorize their effects on his life or that of his family. The book gives great insight to who George Carlin truly was and what he desperately tried to convey to anyone that would listen to him. I came away that he was in conflict with himself more than any other being.Naturally, The famous lines and jokes that are pure Carlin were absolutely hilarious. The last two chapters were a bit deep and dry, but i wold recommend any Carlin fan to read this book to fully understand the genius of this great man. Younger people that are not familiar with George will get insight to a man that very possibly changed the comedic world.Put aside whatever political views that he expressed through the majority of his life. He later realized that his views were not necessarily written in stone, and was not as radical as he thought.Wanna Laugh? Wanna know about Carlin? The book is not deep reading. What the hell, it's George Carlin!
