From the Back Cover

In this riveting fantasy adventure that VOYA called "absolutely necessary for middle grades," thirteen-year-old Jax Aubrey discovers a secret Eighth Day with roots tracing back to Arthurian legend. Fans of Percy Jackson will devour this first book in a new series that combines exciting magic and pulse-pounding suspense. When Jax wakes up to a world without any people, he assumes it's the zombie apocalypse. But when he runs into his eighteen-year-old guardian, Riley Pendare, he learns that he's really in the Eighth Day—an extra day sandwiched between Wednesday and Thursday. Some people—like Jax and Riley—are Transitioners, able to live in all eight days, while others, including Evangeline, the elusive teenage girl who's been hiding in the house next door, exist only on this special day. There's a reason Evangeline's hiding. As the descendant of the powerful wizard Merlin, her magic is highly sought by corrupt Transitioners who want to use her to destroy the seven-day world. Torn between protecting his new friend and saving the human race from destruction, Jax is faced with an impossible choice. Even with an eighth day, time is running out. Be sure to check out The Inquisitor's Mark, the spellbinding second novel in the Eighth Day series.

I'm in my forties, so I may not be a Young Adult, but I still have the soul of one. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy reading any other genre, and do not see any reason to limit its readership to any age group or category. The central concept of The Eighth Day appears to be a very unique idea--especially to myself, an avid reader of comic books and a fan of sci fi and fantasy for 40-plus years. The twist of Arthurian lore adds to the levels of creativity, allowing access to different clans/houses/families with different powers and abilities. Having been a fan of Arthurian stories from Sir Thomas Malory to T.H. White to Mike Barr and Brian Bolland to Warren Murphy to Bernard Cornwell, it's nice to be able to enjoy these legends anew. (If you're not familiar with any of those creators I name-checked, they're worth your while.)Add Dianne Salerni to that list. She has such a smooth writing style that the words seem to jump off the page and into your mind on their own. Her level of characterization sets this book apart from many others in the Young Adult genre, as not only is the main character fully fleshed out, so are many of the supporting characters. In several chapters the main point of view switches to one of these other characters, and those chapters are set in a different font. This is a nice method of storytelling that helps to emphasize the difference between "normal" people and those trapped in the eighth day.Combine all of this with a plot that picks up speed and becomes ever more exciting, and The Eighth Day turns into a book that cannot be put down. At least, this particular grown-up needed less than half of the titular eight days to devour this novel.

I went to college with this author so I wanted to see what she was writing. She became a local teacher, however, I really haven't' been in touch with her besides facebook, twitter, and the occasional run in. As I began the book I was thinking, wow, Dianne wrote this? By the time I finished it, and the other two books, the fact that I know the author was nowhere in my thoughts. It is just a really good book and series. I am hoping it gets picked up for additional books. I really want to learn even more about the characters. These books are great for middle schoolers. I am hoping one day I can get my high school kids away from their activities to read them, but I am not holding my breath because neither reads much for fun.......what a shame too....it's not like I don't read enough in front of them!

Geez, I almost wish I hadn't given both of this author's first two books a five-star rating. Not that they didn't deserve it, but now what do I do with THIS book? It's her best one yet, and I don't have a higher rating to give it. (But it deserves at LEAST a six!)This book was an absolute delight. I mean, who wouldn't be intrigued by the concept of a secret eighth day of the week... we could ALL use one of them at one time or another. But THIS eighth day of the week only exists for certain descendants of folks like King Arthur, Merlin, and the knights of the round table. Neat, huh?But Jax doesn't think it's so neat the first time he experiences a Grunday. Nobody had warned him, so awakening to a strange-looking pink sky and no signs of life around him kinda throws him for a loop. The more he learns about this extra day and his role as one of those special descendants, the deeper he gets into a dangerous struggle to preserve life on earth as we know it, a struggle in which it isn't always clear who's friend and who's foe. This story is filled with great characters, an intriguing adventure, and lots of action, sprinkled with bits of humor. Even a teeeensy bit of romance. Youngsters... and the young at heart... will fall in love with it. Salerni truly outdid herself with this book, and I sincerely hope there's gonna be a sequel.

Imagine a day between Wednesday and Thursday, in which people are trapped, put there centuries earlier by King Arthur and his allies. These are the Kin, King Arthur’s adversaries and they are imprisoned in the Eighth Day to keep the rest of the world safe. Imagine, too, people called Transitioners, who can move between the Normal world and this Eighth Day and who have enhanced talents to protect and help them. And last, imagine a group of people who are plotting to break the Eighth Day spell, to exact revenge on King Arthur’s descendants, obliterate the people of the Normal world and release the Kin in their place. This is the central conflict in The Eighth Day, an exciting fantasy adventure by Dianne K. Salerni. It’s a story with a simple beginning that explodes into global proportions. Jax Aubrey has just turned thirteen and his parents are dead. His guardian, Riley is eighteen and does not seem up to the job. Jax doesn’t know what to think when he wakes up in the Eighth Day, but he soon learns there is a lot going on that he doesn’t understand. All this starts with Evangeline, the mysterious girl next door, who is trapped in the Eighth Day. All heck breaks loose when they become friends and Jax unknowingly puts many in danger. The Eighth Day has many characters with blurred alliances and motives that cross between good and bad. Despite the complexities, you don’t need to be an expert on King Arthur and the players during that legendary time to enjoy this book. Salerni does a great job explaining the plots and subplots and recaps the complicated developments in a way that does not seem repetitive, but is definitely appreciated. The characters are propelled to the story’s ultimate conflict in a huge battle for control of the Eighth Day. Many plot twists drive the story’s sometimes misunderstood characters to an exciting and shocking finish.Although The Eighth Day is a Young Adult fantasy adventure, its themes carry adult messages. Salerni poses questions of honor, loyalty and sacrifice throughout the book. In addition to understanding how opposing sides work together for their own benefit, the reader must consider the question of whether it is right to sacrifice some for the survival of the masses.I enjoyed this book very much. I was glad to have it on my Kindle because it made it easy to search names and places. But that’s more because I’m many years beyond being a Young Adult!

Tucker and his identical twin brother Trent are in trouble in college again. They switched places so Trent could take Tucker’s test, they got caught. They are star hockey players for Strickland University and they both got suspended for two games. Jemma transferred to Strickland University her junior year, she had to get away from her boyfriend who proposed to her. Jemma didn’t want to be stuck in Lancaster. Jemma is pledging a sorority that has her sister in it. The pledges have to run through the Quad in American Flag bikinis. Tucker saw Jemma and grabbed her by the arm both end up on the ground. Jemma ends up groping Tucker. Trent sees Jemma in the cafeteria and tries to talk to her. Neither Trent nor Tucker knew the other was talking to Jemma. Trent got the first kiss and had sex with her first. Tucker had sex with her also. Jemma finds out that they are identical twins and she thinks they were doing it on purpose. Will Jemma be able to forgive Trent and Tucker? Will Trent realize that he has feelings for Jemma? Will Tucker back off?

I absolutely love the Kane Twins. When Trent & Tucker meet Jemma they both know she’s something special but Jemma doesn’t realize they are twins. Both Trent and Tucker want a chance with Jemma but her heart belongs to only one. I absolutely love this series, the characters and I didn’t want the story to end. Can’t wait too read the next book in this series.

A fun read with a generous dose of angst. Reminiscent of Shakespeare’s comedies where mistaken identities reign and bring a bit of chaos. Jemma with a J finds the love of her life.I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ok so I didn't like this one as much as the last one This book seemed a little rushed but was still a good read. She could have gotten a lot more detail of what was going on.

Fun read!! Enjoyable sweet confusing for Jemma read, enjoying the Face-Off Legacy so far, can't wait for Tucker's story!

I gave this book a four rating because it was a good story and I enjoyed the characters and how they grew

I began with the legacy series, Pucking Parker. I didn’t realize these were the kids! Read the dads first! Amazing books with sexy hockey guys! Can’t wait to read them all!

I was very disappointed in this book. I loved the first one, but this one was booooring. The main problem was that the love story doesn't actually start until 70% through the book. Seriously. Before that, there are just casual moments of the characters getting a glimpse of each other and saying Hi on campus. The rest is full of stupid, gag inducing sorority and fraternity scenes and conversations. Like, Who cares?? Basically NOTHING happened for a very long time and that nothingness wasn't even entertaining. This COULD have been a great story. Once they got together, I liked it, but there was not much of that. (If you are reading this because you loved their dad, Tyler or Preston, you'll be disappointed. They make VERY limited cameos.)Two things I hated in addition to the horrible, childish sorority/ fraternity scenes: 1) the author made the heroine into a girl eager to have sex with a near stranger (which she did with two different guys.) There was not even a date or a resl conversation between them first, and the heroine was the aggressor/ temptress in both instances. Ok, fine. But THEN the author and the hero tries to tell us that the heroine is 'not like that'. Well, clearly she is. We just saw her be like that. I think the author ruined a good character as a sacrifice for what she thought was a hot sex scene. Then again, everything about the heroine, Jemma, contradicted what the author and Jemma tried to tell us about her. Supposedly she was 'above' sorority hijinx, a wholesome girl who didnt even want to be in a sorority and yet she let herself be dressed as a whore and marched through campus over and over. She walked through campus and into a fraternity party in high heels and a bra and panties, dressed as a Lingerie model. (Because all wholesome girls do that, right?) THEN she saw girls there in bikinis and said she pitied them that they were willing to show that much skin. WHAT? She is standing there in lingerie as she says it!!!! Ok, I could go on and on, but you get the point.Secondly, the book is filled with mistakes, where the author calls someone by the wrong name, and/ or completely contrradicts something she has just told us about a character. It became very confusing and could have been easily corrected if she had just asked any reader and listened to a true crtitique before having this (obviously rushed) book printed.

If you have "Solaris 9: the complete reference" this book ismostly a photocopy of that book. Save your money and go overto sun's web site and download their solaris 10 information forfree. There are so many things wrong with this book it's hardto find a starting point. Here's one good example: Solaris 10introduces a completely new administration tool for administeringinetd. This book is a reprint of the old methods from Solaris2.6/7/8/9. It's completely worthless. If I could give it anegative rating I would. Also, contacted mcgraw hill supportand (no surprise here) got no reply at all. AVOID.

I've used several of these books in the past (LINUX, VB.NET, and others) and all have been well written covering basic concepts as well as advanced concepts. I've always found the books to be well worth their cost. While this book won't make you a top-notch admin, it will provide a desktop reference for those learning

Seems I forgot to read the reviews for this book before buying - a faux pas I don't usually do. I originally bought the book to learn up on ZFS and basic new features with S10, and nothing I was looking for was actually in the book. What a lame excuse for a 'Complete Reference' book on Solaris.

This book was very disappointing. Although it seems to be complete for Solaris 9, I was not able to find information about smf, inetconv and other new features of Solaris 10. I would not recommend it for Solaris 10 users or administrators.

I'm building several large scale network sites using the new Solaris 10 system... One of the first things I noticed was that the /etc/rc?.d system and the /etc/inetd.conf files were basically *missing*! More research lead me to the SMF framework so I purchased this book to help me with the challanges of a *completely* revamped and rewritten system. Basically this book is 100% incorrect in all its writings about the inetd.conf system and how programs are started. From what I can see, this is nothing more than Solaris 9 with a few updates (none that are relevant) and a title change. Basically I returned my copy within a day along with a comment slip of paper in the top for the next unsuspecting soul. I liked it when it was Solaris 9, I have turned 180 degrees around on this revision of the book.Key areas that I have found missing (that are things you cannot operate the OS without understanding...) include the SMF (service management framework) system, changes in how the entire boot process has changed, dtrace, etc...There are *lots* of new features in Solaris 10 that are also missing in this book. BART (basic auditing and reporting tool) is one that I miss. Others that run Sparc based systems would be interested in zones, and some of us are curious about the up and coming ZFS system. On a side note, the metadb system has only two pages mentioned in the entire book. If you are going to do basic mirroring or anything else (until ZFS comes out) there are a lot more things to discuss about the DiskSuite software that provides RAID services...

Solaris 10 represents a significant upgrade over earlier releases of this operating system and yet this book, as mentioned by another reviewer, is basically just a rehash of earlier editions with only a cursory discussion of the new commands and features scattered throughout the text. Even the existing information seems dated. Why mention the "Netscape mail client" from [...] Solaris 10 provides Sendmail 8.13, not simply "version 8". How about some discussion of Sun's Patch Manager? I find it odd that "Iomega Zip and Jaz" drives are discussed but there is no mention of USB sticks or other USB devices which work on Solaris. In fact, much of the storage device section is out-of-date (A1000 disk arrays and DAT tape drives). Why are tar/cpio described, but not the more versatile pax command? This "Complete Reference" also doesn't have any mention of the very useful "mount -o public" command. All in all not a reference I'd want to rely upon although it has some use as a general Solaris guide if you don't have easy access to the Internet.

This book does not cover new Solaris 10 features. It may make a good Solaris 9 reference, but that is what it is -- A Solaris 9 references with a few paragraphs about Solaris 10. It does not even mention most of the new major features, much less tell you how to use them.A sample of major missing topics:Dtrace: There is no mention of Dtrace. This is one of the most significant features of Solaris 10. It will completely change the way that you solve problems on the system.Zones: A major addition for dev/test environments, server consolidation, or simply protecting the base OS from intrusion into the application space. The book only mentions that they exist, but gives no help or guidance for planning or administration.Service Management Framework (SMF): The way that services are handled has completely changed. Init scripts are nearly all collected into SMF. Inetd is handled within SMF now. This book mentions none of this. The book doesn't just leave out SMF, the old methods it describes are now INCORRECT practice.Fault Management Architecture (FMA): NothingBasic Audit Reporting Tool (BART): NothingThis book might be a good overview of basic Solaris features for junior admins, but if you actually want to use the power of Solaris 10, either go to [...] or wait for a real Solaris 10 book. To see what you are missing, browse through the archived pdf presentations on [...]The old Solaris 9 related content may be good, but I'm giving it one star for omission and deception.

This is the third book by Alda Sigmundsdóttir that I've read since returning from my first trip to Iceland 3 weeks ago. Being of Norwegian heritage, I've always been fascinated about the Vikings discovery and settlement of Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland ("Vinland"), but I knew very little about that history or the culture that developed in these places.I think of Alda as kind of a "reverse Leif Ericson" - she was born in Iceland and raised in Canada and Western Europe, before returning as an adult to "The Land of the Nice". What's awesome about Alda's books is her perspective as an "outsider's insider", and her super concise, articulate yet informal writing style. The books I've read are collections of short essays, which makes them very quick reads.Think of The Little Book of the Hidden People as an Icelandic version of Grimm's Fairy Tales (Alda makes this comparison). Like Grimm's Fairy Tales, there are clear morals to each story that reinforce cultural values. Now, imagine a book of Grimm's Fairy Tales, where each fable is followed by well researched explanations of that story's cultural and historical context, all written in a very vernacular and accessible style. If you can picture that, and it sounds interesting, go ahead and order this book without delay.

According to legend, Eve , mother of mankind, was asked by god to display all her children. In a bout of laziness she selected he best ones and got them presentable. God counted them and made them royalty, the ones that were hidden were confined to a status of dwelling in boulder and mountains. These are the Huldu folk of Iceland which many refer to as elves.Legend has it that if you are in the wilderness you may suddenly see one of them only to have them disappear into a rock or boulder. Much of the lore about these folk is reminiscent of faerie and elf folklore of old Europe. It was on a whim that I decided to purchase this slender volume and believe me I am glad that I made this purchase. Too bad it was not longer as I consumed this volume in a matter of hours and it left me wanting more. Not only were the stories entertaining and the authoress's notes after each story informative but she also has a strong dose of common sense and strong Icelandic pride.SHe starts off dispelling a rumor put forward in Vanity Fair that most Icelander believe in Elves and will not  begin a construction project unless an elf seer is brought in and determines whther or not it is ok to build there. The authoress states boldy that most people do not believe in elves and that before construction begins the place is checked out to see if there is any valuable archaeology or whether it is important in folklore. After all why destroy your own  history. The stories of the Huldu folk arose from a harsh environment where only the strongest could survive. Believe me old Iceland was tough. Bitter cold, lack of food and primitive lodging made survival difficult. More over men could not marry until they accumulated enough wealth which was tough to do. Sexual relation were limited to reduce the number of births. If  the man of the house died the woman lost everything and was sent forward as a laborer .That meant kids were fostered out and the holding auctioned off. People could disappear in fog drifts or get lost along the way from one farmstead to another.Where as the people were poor, the elves had plenty. Elves were known to seduce mortals, this could explain unwanted pregnancies . Humans were not allowed to dance together because it lead in their eyes to illicit unions. Elves often got people to dance. Being abducted by elves could be used to explain away how a child could get lost in a snow drift or step over a precipice. At least a parent could think the child had found a better life.THe book itself is composed of 21 stories collected orally by the author. THey involve many motifs. One popular motif is a mortal woman called a away from church or home to help an elf woman give birth. Th woman is reward but gets an ointment on her eye that allows her to see elves. When the they find out they nullify the effect of the ointment or use some spittle to weaken the eye. Nicer then the European version where the woman in blinded. Several stories involve women meeting hidden folk in a dairy, being seduced and then made pregnant. Later the child is born and the woman gives it to the Huldu Folk. Later the lover comes back after she is married and the two die in each others arms. The child is sometimes raised by the remaining parent or goes off on it's own. There are also stories of those who disturbed eleves and ended up receiving a poor fortune for it. Others who helped the eleves received good fortune.Enjoy these tales they are a quick and entertaining read and the author opens up a door into the mind and heart of Iceland.

I loved this book for its sociological/anthropological take on Icelandic mythology, rather than the usually inexplicable "fantastic epic" prism taken by many authors who venture into this world. It brings very unique points of views which is what makes indie books, such as this one, very interesting, important and of great relevance to be published. Works of this kind enriches and enlightens the big mass publishing market. I have a special love for Iceland, even though I know so little about it. Books like this one are a great way to learn the history of a country though the eyes of the common folk, the everyday farmer, the ordinary people, and basically through unofficial eyes of written History, done by authorities.

Annoying that the author sets the premise that she wants to tell us traditional stories about elves and hidden people, then says she doesn't believe in them and deconstructs the stories in obvious and not very insightful ways. Just ok. I gave it away as soon as I read it. Meh

This short eBook from Alda is another in her continuing series of informal yet almost 'scholarly' works about Icelandic culture. As with her previous efforts, the only fault I can find with any of them is that I finish them too quickly. This book is a welcome respite from 'cute' and sanitized folk stories. There are lots of sexual escapades, some very peculiar Icelandic customs, as well some touching tales of love ending in grief. Alda does a great job in filling in the background on the stories, some of which would be real 'head-scratchers' without her explanations.

-A wonderful little book and an excellent introduction to Icelandic folklore. I used this as a text for my seminar on world folklore because it gave the students a succinct approach to some standard Icelandic tales in addition to other Icelandic reading they were doing before a study tour to Reykjavik. What was most valuable for our purposes is the author's distinct interpretation at the end of every tale. Her strong point of view allowed for some great discussion on the meaning behind the stories.

We had been to Iceland . I have read several of the little books that have been written . I wish I had read this one before we left. Great book and very interesting .

This book is a lovely introduction to the tales of the hidden people. I appreciated that the stories where not embellished and that locations and genealogical ending remarks where left intact.
