This author is an excellent writer that does a very good job of simplifying and explaining the very complex situation/conditions which arose at the Bolsheviks established their regime. I was mainly interested in the sections on the civil war, and while Pipes' account is fairly high-level, it is very well-written and provides an excellent overview of the civil war.This book is probably a bit dated at this point (the hard cover book came out in 1994), but I'm not aware of anything of a comparable scope with a more recent vintage.

Dr. Richard Pipes is the Baird Professor of History at Harvard University. Pipes is a much published and revered expert on the Soviet Union. "Russia Under the Boshevik Regime" is the third volume in his trilogy on Russia. The other two books are"Russia Under the Old Regime" and "The Russian Revolution." Pipes gives the reader thousands of pages to assess the rise to power of the Bolsheviks under Lenin. The cruel totalitarian society which emerges from this material makes Western readers shiver with man's inhumanity to man and how cruelty, greed and the quest for power dominated a great but tragic country. Pipes book is 514 small printed pages in which is learned:a. The true horror and mass slaughter which occurred during the Russian Civil War in the aftermath of World War I. The Bolsheviks had murdered Czar Nicholas II and made a separate peace with Germany. The White were led by Admiral Kolchak and General Denison. Their purpose was to overthrow the Soviets. They were greatly outnumbered by the Soviet forces who won the war.b. The Bolsheviks under Lenin were a party of intellectual atheistic radicals whose chief purpose was the possession of power. They cared nothing about the peasantry (80%) of Russia's population. They instituted mass murder and the population starved in the worst European famine since the Black Death. Millions died from hunger, murder and disease.c. Stalin and Trotsky fought over Lenin's empty seat. The cruel Stalin defeated Trotksy. Trotsky was murdered in Mexico in 1940 by a Soviet agent. Millons would die in the great Stalin purges of the 1930s. Russia suffered millions of casualties in World War II against Germany.d.The Reds defeated several large peasant revolts to hold on to their power base.e. Cultural activities such as painting, music, drama, opera and literary output was strictly under the control of the repressive Communist Party regime.f. Lenin's efforts to interest powerful Western nations to follow Communist teaching in France, Germany, Great Britain and the United States was largely a failed effort.g. The Communist government had many affnities with the repressive czarist regime hich had ruled Russia for three hundred years.h. The Soviet Union was made up of many ethnic and religious groups who had no sense of loyalty to the Moscow government. This lack of common religion, language and loyalty would lead to the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1989.i. The Communist government was atheistic and overtly hostile to religion from anti-semitism pograms to persecution and murder of Russian Orthodox believers, Roman Catholics and Muslims.j. The Nazis and Fascists movement studied Communism and used many of its lessons on how to run a dictatorship. Dr. Pipes magisterial volume reads like an excellent textbok. It is lavishly illustrated; includes a glossary of useful Russian words and includes copious notes. It is not an easy or light read but for anyone who wishes to see Communism revealed in all its garishly brutal and cruel reality will not want to miss reading it from start to finish! Excellent and essential to the scholar of Communism.

A stark and depressing portrayal but exposing the Bolsheviks for what they were is imperative for history.

You can't beat Richard Pipes for dealing out the information in a clear, organized way. He cuts nobody any slack--Bolsheviks are criminals and that's that. For students of the Revolution this book is essential.

Having just read Richard Pipes' trilogy on the buildup and development of the Russian Revolution, I highly recommend them all and thoroughly enjoyed this closing edition. I certainly hope that Mr. Pipes continues the series into the Stalin era at some point.

These 3 books by Sherri Warner Hunter were just a repeat of each other. They used the same photos and same write ups.It was a waste of money to purchase all three.

And create things based on ideas from this book! The author is an accomplished artist utilizing concrete in many forms. Most of the pictures in the book are tributes to her accomplishments, and she has provided quite a variety of projects to support her processes. The book describes step-by-step accounts of many, many different styles of concrete work. It also provides numerous concrete recipes depending on the use and region for climate exposure. Altogether, it is not cumbersome yet is still comprehensive in coverage.I would like to see Ms Warner Hunter create a how-to book on creating hypertufa fairy houses, which is my ultimate goal in concrete art. I would also like to know if she has ever discovered a sealant capable of protecting exterior projects in harsh Minnesota winters so some of the heavier projects survive.

I don't really care much at all for most of the modern concrete art in this book, but I still love this book for the ideas it gives me to make my own designs and also explains how to do it.I do a lot of sculpting in clay and am also very much into gardening, and have now found a new medium for making beautiful ornaments, planters, furniture for my garden and also things I can make as gifts using concrete mixtures. The best part of this book for me is how it demonstrates how to create various forms and armatures to allow your ideas to become real. The photographs are plentiful and give you a very clear idea of how it's done.I have Sherri Hunter's first book on Creating With Concrete, but I like this one even more. Great fun book!

OK... let me start off by saying I don't usually take the time to do this sort of thing---writing reviews. This book deserves some of my time tho. I saw a gal on a craft show one morning making the leaf stone. I was fascinated to say the least. Then when I was looking for a book on mosaics for another project I stumbled upon this book by accident. I remembered the show and the beautiful leaf imprint. I ended up buying both of them. I'm very happy I did. There is tons of projects in this affordable craft book to keep me busy for a long time. Many color pics too with detailed instructions and ideas on how to improvise for materials. I really don't see how anyone that is a passionate crafter wouldn't love this book. Several of my friends already want to borrow it... but I'm afraid they'll be waiting for a long time. >grin

This book contained a lot of information and was more than I was looking for. I would say that this book is directed more towards concrete art projects rather than diy/crafty projects. It covers everything up to and including large concrete sculptures. Needless to say it is more than I need, but it is good to have the information nonetheless.Most of the projects included aren't really my style, but the techniques could be easily adapted to fit any style.

I've been getting into concrete this past year, creating flower pots and leaves, and I wanted to expand a bit. This book had some good ideas and may be totally inspirational for some people, but i wasn't 'wowed' with it. Still, i found it had good construction techniques and a few good ideas so I did keep it.

I was a little worried when I received the book: Glossy pages full of colored photographs often suggest that the contents may be rather light on substance. Not so here! This is our official textbook for our Introduction to Linguistics class at ISU. Our teacher explicitly stated that, of all the proper textbooks and materials, this was the most concise and consistent he could find.Many other books have stances on topics that others don't agree with, but this one presents different viewpoints in a comprehensive and non-biased way. And since this is so cheap, my instructor was even more excited to use it.After using this for a few months I can completely agree with him. It's fun to read and it explains everything well using great examples. I would recommend this over a textbook any day.

I bought this to help me study for my graduate test in linguistics. However, it turned out that I really didn't need this book because I knew it all! I was hoping to use it to help me to study and reinforce, but this book is really for those who might be interested in studying linguistics or those who need a bit of background info. They don't go terribly far into detail, but that's what makes it so easy to read and understand.

I find the Dummies books to be hit or miss. With this one, it is definitely a hit! What a wonderful introduction to the world of lingusitics. Thorough but easy to read. Incredibly informative. Well organized. For me, it's a quick reference book for concepts that I don't use as often, but if I were to teach an introductory course, I would use this book rather than the $100+ textbook options out there.

This was a very enjoyable introduction, with enough depth to introduce a broad range of linguistic concepts. Linguistics is a very broad discipline, and in some places it seemed like things were being glossed over quickly; what choice is there with a book like this. At times I was happy there was not more depth; I got my introduction, and I'm just not interested in going further. This is a perfect launching point for exploration, and it seems it could make a fine textbook for an introductory college course.

This should seriously be the textbook for an intro to linguistics course. This book helped me through that semester, even with the hindrance of the craptastic text book.

I'd had a LinkedIn account for a long time, but I never used it. This winter, I decided to develop my account. Visual Quick Start books are usually concise and full of information, and the books work as a reference once you're up and running. This book was disappointing. There was very little technical information. The book focused on features of LinkedIn in a very general way. My free version of LinkedIn is fully developed. I have received some very interesting job postings for full time work, although I am interested in part time.Also, this is the first time I've purchased a digital version of a reference book. I don't recommend doing that. It's much easier to flip through a reference while working on a screen.

For someone who's new to LinkedIn, this would be a really good book. It covers all the ins and outs of the site and gives some really good tips on maximizing your personal profile and best practices for networking through LinkedIn. I definitely picked up a few nuggets. It also covered some lesser-known aspects (at least to me) of LinkedIn like the suggestions in the last chapter, "Miscellaneous Uses for LinkedIn."However, the primary reason I bought the book was to learn how to best manage a COMPANY profile (rather than an individual profile) on LinkedIn. This book was woefully lacking on that subject. In fact, it was never mentioned.Overall, it was a good book, it just didn't address the one thing I was specifically looking for.

LinkedIn is fascinating but,not easy for me to navigate or figure out. I have read SO much about how this site is booming and helping others build their businesses and I wanted to accomplish the same thing.I own a company of my own but,I had not given much thought to using LinkedIn to help me do it until I read about this website. I blundered through signing up for it but,without a lot of direction. This book is slowly helping me understand the ins and outs of this site in a step by step manner.

For those of you who don't know the name, Grant Cunningham is a well known and respected gun writer, trainer and gunsmith, He is known for his very methodical, common sense approach to guns and self-defense. What I had not previously known about him is that he has a degree in Emergency Management and is involved in disaster preparedness for his local Sheriff's office. That's what inspired him to write his latest book.In "Prepping for Life" he takes a departure from writing just about guns and looks at the larger picture of disaster prepping. He takes a different approach from nearly every author I have read on this topic. He presents the methodology used by disaster preparation professionals, and the military, which is the use of a threat matrix. It's a simple idea that can get as complicated as you want/need it to: You analyze and prioritize all the threats you face, the way you see it in your particular situation. He encourages readers to consider medical and natural threats as well as man-made threats.Then you look at how you might deal with those threats at the levels of Anticipate, Deter, Detect and Respond (with "Recovery" being part of "Respond"). Possible choices can be buying survival "stuff" but it can also be taking training, repositioning stuff you already have, changing behaviors, etc. His credo is to work toward getting to an 80% preparedness level for all likely threats and then re-assessing what you want to do beyond that. One mistake people make is getting 100% prepared for one kind of threat, such as violent crime, but then ignoring other risks, like fire, cancer, job loss, etc. He takes the position that risks are risks, period. Any deadly threat can leave you just as dead as any other.He includes links to downloadable worksheets that help you do all this analysis. I highly recommend the book. It is a quick read, but full of great stuff.

Prepping has been all one-sided for far too long. People talk of carrying a firearm as if it solves all the problems in their world. It doesn't. People preach freeze-dried food or bomb shelters the same way, as if this one thing is all you need to survive when the crisis occurs. Different crisis happen to different people in different places with different lifestyles. There is no One-Size-Fits-All method to prepare. Grant Cunningham walks you through the process of determining what is most likely to happen to you and your family and what you need to do to be prepared for that eventuality. If there's no earthquake coming -- why am I preparing for one? Then again, it appears I may need a few more fire extinguishers in and around my home because fire is a very real possibility for me and mine. Prepping is a lifestyle decision. You cannot simply buy a gun and be prepared. This is a terrific book which is NEW in that it examines ALL the aspects of what could happen to you and how you may prepare intelligently for that possibility. Buy it now.

There is little to add to the reviews below, which are extensive and revelatory. Mr. Cunningham is obviously smart and articulate. He has taken the considerable time and trouble needed to research his plan to the professional level of competence. He seems not to be constitutionally a contrarian, but he looks at whatever problem set he examines, be it bullpup rifles or general emergency preparation or anything else, with open mind and no preconceptions, and he takes no one's word for anything. He dissects the topic to its essential subunits, then analyzes back up to a whole opinion. He certainly may not always be right--who is, after all--but his ideas and recommendations are based not only on his experience but his logical analysis. He's a trained disaster manager and a clear thinker.Bottom line: anyone concerned with disaster/emergency preparation owes both him-/herself and significant others a careful reading of this book. IT EMPHATICALLY IS NOT A DOOMSDAY END-OF-THE-WORLD-AS-WE-KNOW-IT BOOK, A SURVIVALIST-HEAD-FOR-THE-HILLS BOOK, OR A GUN BOOK. Mr. Cunningham simply shows you how to identify what YOU think are possibilities of concern, and then he gives you a way to address them that works for YOU and your situation.

I love this book! I'm an experienced "prepper", but this book takes a fresh perspective. The author teaches you how to analyze your own life and situation and how to decide what to prepare for and where to best spend your effort and dollars. His approach is unique from anything else I've seen in the prepper literature and I found it very helpful! He helps you take the birds eye view and prioritize what you need to do for your individual situation. His "threat assessment" method is fantastic - really makes it clear what the priorities should be.The book is well written and easy to read. I liked the author's writing style. He's clear and very helpful. This book was definitely worth the money.

Unlike many preparedness books, this does not give you "lists of lists" or recommend products to purchase. Further it doesn't suggest you need to master traditional skills like animal husbandry or blacksmithing so you can thrive in a post-apocalyptic society.Prepping For Life instead provides a much needed perspective. Learn to balance risk with cost, and apply this mindset to every day life.

I'm not a pepper but I really like the authors common sense approach to life. I didn't use any of the forms but I really liked the common sense approach to life and problems. No big secrets here, just some common sense reality.This author also writes realist self defense firearms books. I have had several people ask me about guns for self defense. I take them to the range for some practice, teach them basic safety and get them a copy of one of Cunninghams's books.
