The biggest takeaway for me was the analogy that 401ks and IRAs are like "vehicles" for your investments, not actual investments. Simple info. If that sounds ridiculously obvious-then this book is too beginner for you.I am probably the perfect person for this type of book. Zero knowledge and basically uncomfortable with money/numbers in general. This book is simple, straight forward with a casual approach. I like how it is broken into days so I didn't feel guilty reading only a few pages a a time and it kept me from overwhelming myself. Obviously a lot of details are left out and when I actually went to look at my current 401k info, it used none of the same verbiage that was used in the book. Little frustrating but this is just a very beginner starting point and between the simplified book info and google I was able to make sense of things better.
It's sad that out of the over a thousand books I've read over all my adult years, I'm just getting around to reading book about investing.This book, I read in about two hours including annotating, is a good introduction to the subject as far as I can tell. There's some confusing details in parts, but just keep reading and take some notes.I plan to follow-up on Jesse's recommendations to get started investing. I've used his zero budgeting system for over two years now, and it has helped me discipline my spending and savings for true expenses to get to the point I can start investing. I could have done this a long time ago if I had only read this or a book like it.
Great book on investing. If you know nothing start here. Jesse makes the whole process understandable and less intimidating. I still have some more research to do before starting (not sure I want to go with Betterment) but I'm way closer to ready to start than ever before. I actually feel like I know what I read and what I'm talking about now! Pick this book up and it will really get your base knowledge down so you can start making good investment decisions.
Investing can seem scary because it's not something many are taught. But if you don't over complicate things and you focus on a tried and true method of investing passively. You may be able to save a decent nest egg by the time you retire.There are a few things in your control - time, amount of money invested and the asset allocation. Other things are not in your control such as market performance or taxes but you can to minimize these things by diversifying and using exchange traded funds or index/mutual funds.
This is a great book for gaining a simple and straightforward understanding of investing. Where so many other no ok nd tend to get way too technical, or have a length that is prohibitive, this one is intentionally kept simple and easy to understand, thereby providing an entry into investing that is accessible to everyone...especially those not possessing an accounting degree. I'd highly recommend this to anyone and everyone , but especially to young adults just starting out on their own.
Back in the 70s I came across a very clear explanation of investing named The Only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need (Andrew Tobias) which explained the mystery of investing in clear terms. Jesse Meecham writes with the same clarity and self deprecating humor, but updates the advice for the 21st century. This is the best introduction to investing for the novice. It should be taken as a call to action.
A great day to day read that really opened my eyes to the simple foundations of investing. I think reading it one day at a time and pondering on the ideas of each chapter really helped me get a really good grasp on the basics of investing. Dude's got jokes and tries to make the dry material a little more bearable. I would recommend reading his other titles and perhaps taking a look at his software platform. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Recommend this to anyone who is not sure where to get started with investing. YNAB has been a game changer for creating and managing a spending plan. Jesse delivers an easy to follow actionable plan. With the money my wife and I have saved, we opened a Betterment account to try robo-investing.
