In the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, wedged between Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan, it is at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, an ancient land with a rich history and culture. Because of its coveted position on the ancient Silk Road crossing the formidable Caucasus Mountains, much of that history has been violent, including invasions, attacks and occupation. Despite this destruction and continual turmoil that saw the capital, Tbilisi, razed to the ground multiple times, the Georgian people have rebuilt their land and their cities, maintaining their culture, language and love of life and wine in the face of extreme adversity. This triumph has been captured superbly in Alice Feiring’s latest book, For The Love of Wine. An award-winning writer, Alice is an ardent champion of natural winemaking, who chronicles her voyage of discovery through this magical land. “It was like emerging from the magic wardrobe into a world filled with mythical characters making delicious wine,” she writes. The wine is made using an ancient process that has existed in Georgia for over 8,000 years. Indeed, evidence points to Georgia as being the cradle of wine (or “ghvino” as it is called here). That the process has survived at all is miraculous, given the lengths to which the Shahs of Persia and the Soviets, among others, went to destroy the vines. The fact that several hundred species exist today in Georgia (most of them unknown to the rest of the world) is a testament to the tenacity of the people….and the vines. I first came across For the Love of Wine while researching our trip to Georgia. I read it cover to cover in one sitting and then read it again slowly, savoring every word, every description, every image, as Alice led me on an odyssey through the country. She is so passionate and eloquent that I could almost imagine myself walking alongside her. In the process she describes how wine is made using “natural” or “organic” techniques. In the fall the grapes are stomped in a long wooden trough; the grape juice, together with skins and pips are poured into Qvevri (enormous terra cotta clay pots, the relative of Roman and Greek Amphorae) to ferment. When fermentation is complete, the grape sediment is removed. The wine is then left to age in the Qvevri, buried in the ground, anywhere from 1-8 years. No pesticides are used on the vines, and there are no yeasts, preservatives or chemicals added, just the grapes going through a natural process and turning out a unique and delicious product. As she meanders through the vineyards where kisi, mtsvane, rkatsiteli and other grapes grow, Alice Feiring introduces us to many of the local inhabitants – the farmers, winemakers, Qvevri-makers, chefs, who are embracing their roots and their traditions, notwithstanding the efforts of outsiders who arrive with their chemicals, pesticides and so-called “modern” technology to change the traditional ways. The characters come to life as she describes them – Bishop Davit, the Metropolitan of Alaverdi Monastery who “has made traditional and natural wine a mission of the church;” Zaliko, maker of qvevri in Imereti; Lamara Bezhashvili, “a fierce Kakhetian woman who embodies the spirit of natural qvevri wine.” Alice celebrates their traditions and their way of life, including their love of feasts (the supra) with wine at its core, presided over by a toastmaster (the tamada). Food after all is a necessary part of wine drinking. And Georgian food is delicious! To tantalize your taste buds, tucked away through the book you will find recipes for such delicacies as Beets with Cherry Sauce or Rose Petal Jam, interspersed in the narrative. Throughout, Alice Feiring is a passionate and outspoken defender of Georgian natural winemaking, which many believe has healing properties. After all, Georgia is one of the countries where the number of people living into their 100s far exceeds the norm elsewhere. Alice’s enthusiasm and passion is contagious. By the time the book had been finished for a second time, we couldn’t wait to travel. In fact, we were so excited by what we had read, we ran out to several New York City wine shops to look for bottles of natural Georgian wine. Imagine the glee when we ran into Alice, together with four of Georgia’s top winemakers – Nikki Antadze, Ramaz Nikoladze, John Okrasvhivili and John Wurdeman --- at a Georgian winetasting at Chambers Street Wines. Needless to say, many bottles were purchased and drunk! “Butchki!” as they say in Georgian before clinking glasses! I have read all of Ms Feiring's books and each one tells a story of discovery. This one is no different. Alice takes a journey to Georgia and discovers a whole lot about the making of wine there. She meets and becomes friends with winemakers and discovers the various flavors and ingredients used in their cooking. She talks in the book about the winemaking and how quevri are used. I felt that I learned a lot from her trips and discoveries in the winemaking areas of Georgia where for the most part they are making wine the old way.

This was a well written book that I wish I had had when we visited Georgia last summer. I thought the Reds were the best but I knew nothing about skins, etc. The author nailed the part about the passion of toasting with wine and the supras. It goes on and on. I found the sequence a little hard to follow and some of the areas were not shown on the map. This would be a great book to read before traveling to this wonderful country.

With humor, wine savvy and a deep understanding of the natural world, Alice Feiring writes about Georgia and its incredible wine traditions. I'm fortunate enough to be living in Georgia for a few years, and have found my wine primer!

I was born in Soviet Union. But surprisingly the truth and real history of georgian wines I have opened for myself from this book of american writer! I know very well georgian people and their depiction in this book are exact and bright. Thank you, Alice!

Georgia--the one in the Caucasus--may be the original home of Vitis vinifera, the noble wine grape. It may be the first place wine--or ghvino--was produced. Muslim invaders ripped out vines. Soviet occupiers imposed industrial production of a limited number of varietals. Yet traditional Georgian wine making somehow survived.Ancient, barely known today, grape varietals are fermented, both red and white, on their skins in qvevri (or kvevri), which are something like large amphorae buried in the ground. The author takes us on excursions through Georgia, meeting winemakers reviving the old traditions, and experiencing legendary Georgian hospitality. Every chapter ends in a recipe.So far, very interesting.Unfortunately, the author is a crusader for completely "natural", as she defines it, wine making. And she brooks no dissent.I am sympathetic to her concerns about consultants trying to make Georgian wine making into a clone of modern wine making around the world. But she rejects allowing wine makers any latitude to experiment with modern techniques in order to make even better wine, or perhaps a better living.Take yeast. She insists that wine makers allow natural yeasts to ferment the wine. The problem with this is that there are many yeasts out there, and you can get lucky or unlucky. That's why most wineries inoculate their juice with a strain of yeast known to produce good wine. But to Feiring that is not natural, even if the yeast used is an entirely natural one.She says: "Embrace all of the yeasts, including those that initially give off flavors and funky aromas." In other words, wine that's off made her way is better than wine that tastes good because the wine maker choose the yeast.Feiring describes natural wine making as "shepherding" the wine into to bottle, while commercial wine making is "coercing" the wine into the bottle. I've never been a shepherd, and I'm pretty sure she hasn't either, but it's always been my impression that part of what shepherds do is coerce the sheep into doing what the shepherd wants them to do, rather than what they want to do.The biggest problem is that she often writes like it's about her, not the Georgians. She jets in, enjoys their hospitality, and tells them the right way to make wine. (Unlike the consultants she hates who jet in and tell them the wrong way to make wine.) The Georgians are the ones risking what little capital and land they have trying to make a living. They are the ones doing the hard work. But they dare not do anything that she disapproves of. Never mind that she is better off than they are, has no money at risk, and is doing no labor other than eating their food, drinking their wine, and writing about it. She has no skin in the game, but she's always right.You might think she has really invested in understanding Georgian culture. But late in the book she learns a new word in Georgian, and notes that she now knows ten, rather than nine, words of the language. I have no doubt that she loves the Georgians. But in a somewhat condescending way.In reality, she's a tourist telling the locals how to live their lives. Concerned about re-encountering another foreigner who has a different vision of the direction Georgian wine making should take, she concludes: "If there were any more arguments, I'd be there with my people and armed with a depth of knowledge about Georgia and why the organic and natural mattered." A depth of knowledge that includes a whole ten words of the language. Gag!The publisher provided me a copy for review.

My 11 year old is now into crafts, she mentioned doing stuff with duct tape and I found this book. I saw a glossy cover and figured, why not.I should've looked better at the product description. I'd say there's less than a handful of projects (to be fair I have big hands) and it's about 16 pages. It's basically a pamphlet, not a book!

I purchased this BOOKLET for my 9 year old daughter. She looooooves making duck tape anything. I read reviews about how this is a cheap product. A pamphlet. A this, a that. Although I would not call this product a book I wasn't disappointed at all with the content. It has several projects that range from super simple to OMG I can't do that. I would call this item a BOOKLET not a book and would recommend this to anyone that enjoys working with duck tape.

This was a gift to my Nieces (along with some tape). They are 7 and 8. They were able to easily follow the directions in this book. I was worried I would have to help them every step of the way. I admit, I did help a little and was there to supervise the cutting of the tape but for the most part, they were able to do it all on their own.Great for kids and adults!

I agree with whoever said it first.......9 bucks is outrageous for this item. It's 16 pages, paper thin. What this amounts to is more of a pamphlet. Contents are fine, the price is insane. Live and learn......ill pay closer attention next time to what I'm ordering. But this cannot be reasonably classified as a book even.

This book was bought for my daughter as a gift. She loved it. I grew up with duck tape, who knew how cool it was!!! Was a well received gift.

In this personal scale size book, just the kind I really do love, he equips readers with a 5 week plan to identify where they are procrastinators and how to make a plan to overcome their specific style of procrastination. I loved that one as well. Personally, my favorite was the Franklin Quest system, but we each have the systems we love. I still like PAPER for certain things because I can better SEE it and the vision of the space of time over a period of time presentation method. It’s about the unconscious mind responds well to visuals and physically hand writing things out.He’s been teaching Time Management for 20 years now and earned the fun nickname Captain Time and has a small YouTube channel for over 11 years now which is cited on the back cover. I rather like his presentation of his very practical methods for managing time and surfacing and managing distractions which can all too frequently pose a hurdle and redirect our productive time pursuits onto the path of procrastination.My own faulting of his book is that he provides some excellent techniques but doesn’t address any of the mental and emotional issues surrounding procrastination other than at a very superficial level; much like a really great Diet Book should at least touch on and point you to other resources for emotional eating. As a hypnotherapist, I’m well-versed in this, and it need not necessarily entail years of therapy unless there really is something massive going on.On page 32 he only touches on it for those who have a major emotional issue going on. The thing is, there is always a mental and emotional component with Procrastination going on. He makes it sound like only those grappling with mental illness and disorders need that kind of emotional help. No Time Management System and Procrastination Release Guide is complete without bringing that in more than he does. They are more about Personal Development than just reading and applying only a Self-Help book as he describes it. Procrastination is compensation behavior. If you don’t address it with a mental/emotional tool, then it will come out and surface elsewhere in another place in your life like a whitehead. I’m harder on him about this because otherwise, I found this an excellent book about breaking free from Procrastination patterns. I’m not dinging his stars at all for this. Many people don’t recognize this or treat it only as an issue for Feelers in the Myers-Briggs typed folks.Coulson provides a 5 Week Plan, like any high quality Diet Plan, think of this as a Diet Plan for your Procrastination Habit, he gives the reader a course to follow over an extended period of time, in fact, 2 weeks longer than the 21-days necessary to establish a new habit. By following and implementing his 5 Week Plan, you’ll not only have the new habit installed, with the additional 2 weeks to his plan, you’ll have those new habits well-cemented into your modus operandi daily life.In the introduction Coulson walks us through a bit of how he got started teaching Time Management and starting his own consulting business where he teaches thousands time management skills. Early on, he lets his readers know that you’ll need only about 20 minutes per day to complete his exercises and the associated action steps necessary to implement them. That’s really quite reasonable and doable.In Chapter 1 What’s Holding You Back Coulson distills his many years of working in Time Management consulting to 5 basic Procrastinator profiles to better understand ourselves and plan accordingly. I think upon reading them, if you can’t identify with at least 1 if not more of the attributes of these Procrastinator archetypes, then you’re a Time Management and Productivity saint!They are:1. The Worrier2. The Perfectionist3. The People Pleaser4. The Hummingbird5. What does it say when you put off starting a book on ending procrastination? That you probably REALLY need this book!After weeks of carrying the book everywhere and not actually cracking it open, I finally began Operation End Procrastination. This book is a very accessible guide through not only HOW to end procrastination, but WHY we procrastinate. The author sets out some simple exercises and self-studies to help cut out this bad habit. I don't know for sure that I've kicked it, but I have my Stop Wasting Time notebook and tools to help get it done! For those hoping to get rid of this problem, I recommend picking up this book. (Stop putting it off until tomorrow... just do it!)I received a review copy of this book from the publisher.

I love that this book is broken down into weekly action steps that are manageable and attainable. A good guide.

The author begins by looking at the reasons for procrastination and the types of procrsstination. He then goes on to give processes to help you reduce procrastination and become more productive.

As an expert procrastinator as well as a therapist, I approve. The book will be helpful to procrastinators (when they get around to reading it) and for therapists as a treatment tool. This book is worth the wait. For best results I do recommend combining therapy along with the book (as with all self help tools). However, this book alone would be the next best option for someone who procrastinates. Let's face it, it is much easier to get around to reading a book than it is to get around to seeing a therapist on a regular basis.I especially enjoyed the books accessability and the author's sound advice.I received this book as a sample from the publisher. My six year old daughter was starting 2nd grade and was struggling with reading. I felt like she missed something in phonics in 1st grade. I bought this book and had her do 1 or 2 pages each day. They were fairly easy for her but it really helped build her confidence and she was able to pick up what she missed.It covers only SHORT vowel sounds.It also covers clusters at the beginning and end, for example clam, block, windSome of the words covered are:glassflagskunkcrackspellsniffswimtwindripdesklampgiftsinkcrustplantThere are many more words but just to give you an idea of what types of words are on the worksheets.

Perfect for my 5 year old after finishing Explode the Code Book 1. Previously she did Kumon Workbooks. We tried Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons and it didn't work because my daughter didn't like me dictating every single step. She loves how independent she is with this workbook, and I love it too!

As with all the explode the code books, I have one complaint. The pictures! Seriously, other homeschool moms and I laugh at how horrible they are- sometimes the child can't tell what it is, and mom can't either! It doesn't happen often enough to chuck the whole book out the window, but it can be annoying. I love that my child can work independently, and learn spelling. You don't even need the teacher book.

I have used Explode the Code books for four years now and with three different children and I can not say enough about what a wonderful book series this is! My 6 year old son is using this book now and loves it. He can get a few pages done in under 15 minutes, so he feels a sense of accomplishment while learning valuable spelling and reading skills.

I think this is decent, but I really dislike the pictures in the book. They look more like scribbles (if you can't tell from the cover) and are hard to decipher sometimes. This makes it hard for a child to understand what's being asked if they can't figure out what the picture is showing. Even so, we're continuing to use these for our homeschool curriculum for the time being.

These books are excellent. They're fun, thorough, and really drive home the points that young readers need. We are on our second child with these books, starting at A and working our way forward. I'd tried a traditional preschool curriculum but it just wasn't a direct approach that my son needed. These books give that approach and cover handwriting as well. Now that our daughter is using them I can truly see just how great they are. Plus they're generally inexpensive and that's a huge plus!

I home school and am teaching the last of my five kids how to read. Love these books. They progress in nice, incremental levels. The student gets satisfaction as they figure out the words. I recommend this series to all my other home schooling friends.

I cannot say enough good things about these books. Yes, they have some "silly nonsense" but 5yr olds love that "silly" stuff. We have been very happy with all the Explode the Code books and this one is no exception! After introducing a new phonic sound, etc my son can sit, follow the directions and practice independently. As some other people have said, I do agree that the pictures can be somewhat confusing and need some explanation. Multiple times a week (we do 2-3 of these worksheets a day) my children have to stop and ask what the pictures represent. I can see how that may be frustrating for struggling readers also. That is why I gave this 4 stars.

I read with alacrity "Brain Based Parenting: the neuroscience of caregiving for healthy attachment", on which Daniel J. Seigel was the third author, and gave that book 5 stars in an Amazon.com review. So I started out with high expections for Siegel's more recent work, Brainstorm. Really, I did. Unfortunately the weaknesses of the book far outweighed its strengths, for me anyway, as I'll outline below. There are multiple other books on raising and understanding teenagers I'd recommend before this one, as I'll list at the end.Strengths: (1) It's always good to remind oneself of the positive aspects of the developmental phase of the adolescent. Siegel lists these strengths as: intense and spontaneous emotions, intense and powerful peer and social connections, a spark of uniqueness and originality, and a profound search for one's identity and place in the universe. Frustrated parents can easily fall into the trap of seeing only your teenager's faults and negative behaviors. Remembering to see the upside (which is really only discussed in the first chapter of the book) is a good thing. (2) Somehow Siegel wanders into the topic of healing your brain from trauma. During the course of this digression, he reviews an intriguing theory of psychological trauma (p. 176ff) that painful memories that are 'locked up' in the right hemisphere - the seat of emotion, imagery, and "implicit" (timeless and voiceless) memories - cause intense pain, fear, and flashbacks. When the right and left (verbal, analytic, logical and chronological) brain are integrated, the left side of the brain can give a coherent narrative to the trauma story and place it into a past perspective. Healing from trauma then occurs when what was formerly intense, limitless, and present danger, is transformed into more comprehensible, limited, and coherent past experience. This is a powerful theory of trauma and healing and helps to explain why social connections and social supports aid in the prevention and healing of PTSD. Note: the theory is not presented here for the first time, but Siegel's review of it is interesting.Weaknesses: (1) In contrast to "Brain-Based Parenting", I found the book haphazardly organized and the writing style surprisingly poor. Siegel's sentences were run-on, off topic, and varied irritatingly between medicalese and schmaltzy sentimentality. His topics were all over the map, too: from the title topic, to attachment theory, to general advice for getting enough sleep and eating well, to "Mindsight" exercises for meditation and raising awareness. I was disappointed; I felt the book didn't stick to any consistent theme and was probably a hastily put together collection of blog posts. Search "teenage brain fitness" or "the adolescent brain" on Amazon.com and one will find many appealing titles on the topic that look more propitious than this one. (2) Siegel's stated intention is to write a book intdended to be read by both parents and their teenagers, perhaps even read aloud from one to another. Despite a number of cute cartoons, I can hardly imagine a teenager in modern America today who could make it successfully through this meandering, poorly written volume. I have one teenager and one pre-teen, and I am involved in volunteering and in contact with many of my daughters' friends (and, well, I also happen to be a psychiatrist and have seen hundreds of teens in crisis through a psychiatric emergency center in Fairfax County, Virginia). The only thing I can say in response to the idea of an American teenager finding this book readable would be "fuggedaboudit." Or maybe "you must be Cray-Cray."I found the following books infinitely more useful, readable, and enjoyable than Brainstorm: (1) Haim Ginot's "Between Parent and Teenager", (2) Thoms Phelan's "surviving your teenager", (3) Anything by Gershen Kaufman, Ph.D., especially "personal power for teens", (4) "Brain-Based Parenting" (see above), and (5)Ginsburg's "Roots and Wings." I tried hard to find the positives in this book; I read around five books per month so I am not averse to working hard to get something from a read, so I don't give out the dreaded "2 star" rating casually. I had to put this one down for long stretches and really force myself to punch on through, however. There are any number of other books on teenagers and their development I would encourage readers to turn to before, or instead of, this one.

Relationships are the key factor associated with medical and mental health, longevity, and even happiness.N: Novelty-seeking emerges from shifts in the brain’s dopamine system with the downside of risk-taking behavior and injury, and the upside of having the courage to leave the familiar, certain, and safe home nest for the unfamiliar, uncertain, potentially unsafe world beyond.CE: And our Creative Exploration of adolescence is found as we push against the status quo, imagining how things could be, not simply accepting them for what they are. The downside? Not just conforming to life as usual can be disorienting and stressful. The upside? The thrill and passion of discovery—and the reality that most innovations in art, music, science and technology emerge from the adolescent mind."(quotation from his website)

I was recommended this book by a friend, and have found it useful, but a bit tedious for my liking. There is some helpful information in the book relative to how teens (in my case boy) change as they get older, and it was good to know that my teen's current behavior, while not bad, was normal. The author decided to write the book with both an adolescent and adult reader in mind, which is fine, but I find it hard to believe that many adolescents made it through this book (but his quotes inside the book suggest otherwise).

Great for adolescents and everyone that has to interact with them. As a middle school teacher, this presented information that I did not know. They are going through a lot of changes (not just hormonal!) that we all should understand.

This is an excellent book! Provides great insight into developing minds. We all like to think that we haven't forgotten what it's like to grow up, but I must admit that this gave me an added perspective on my own adolescence as well. As tough as it can be to raise children, this has really helped me [re]focus my efforts. I got both the MP3 disk (for my long commute) and the paperback (for reference).

I'm grateful to Daniel J. Siegel MD. He gifted the world with a wonderful, easy-to-follow look at life experiences, relationship bonds and the effects on the brain. Vice-a-versa: how brain development influences our love relationships. I've read many developmental psychology books for study and pleasure. This is the best I've ever read on the subject of optimizing the brain in order to improve connection with ourselves and our loved ones. I prefer the simpler title, Brainstorm, because the information is universal.

Awesome, just awesome. This is the RTC, therapeutic boarding school, wilderness therapy field guide manual to the adolescent brain. Siegel is brilliant, engaging and not way over your head when it comes to neuroscience. It is so readable that my HS students read it for therapy and work through the mindset exercises without being confused or thinking that it's middle school drivel.
