Like all the "and Philosophy" books, this is a great read. I couldn't put it down.

The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy is a interesting book which seems to come at the problem from two directions. One direction is to examine the books, trying to understand the ideas and reasoning of the different characters by taking examples from the history of philosophy and the great thinkers of philosophy.The other way seems to be to take philosophy and explain certain ideas, for example from early Greek thinkers, by using characters and events from the books as examples.In other words half the book is trying to explore the world of Middle-earth using philosophy are a road map while the other half the book explores our world of thought and ideas using understandable examples both adults, and some children, will know from Middle-earth. That IS the point of the series - using popular culture to help examine, explain and explore thought.Questions about ethics, what does it mean to be good, why BE good, would you WISH to live forever, and is technology evil are all examined. Some of the answers ARE interesting and also add, I think, to Tolkien's works. The thing is I think if you are into the Lord of the Rings, either the books or the movies, you may have already gone over many of these questions in your mind. So you may find the book boring or, at least, somewhat limited in scope. There are no real surprises.A good book to read during a snow storm in front of the fireplace IF you have no other new books around. Of course, I would suggest getting The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings if you don't already have it.

This book is an eye opener on Antitrust and the gov't abuse of it and the court's misunderstanding of economics and the intent of the law.

In the Antitrust Paradox, Judge Robert H. Bork gives a fascinating, though demanding, review of the most important antitrust issues in the United States. The central, pragmatic thesis of Bork is maximization of consumer welfare (also called economic efficiency) and not the protection of small businesses in addressing any antitrust issue. The book was not always a smooth read for me - at times it felt more like a collection of stories strung together, but ultimately I enjoyed the book, and the spotlight it shines on the ecological disaster wrought by the oil industry (and corrupt and colluding politicians) and what it means for ordinary people.

This book is rich and heartbreaking.Documenting the atrocities that Dutch Royal Shell committed against the Ogoni people and the struggle the Wiwa family went through to return the bodies of wrongfully executed civilians this book is harrowing. While dense, I was surprised how well everything flowed together and I didn't feel like I got too bogged down. The retelling of Ken Wiwa's assassination is an important and gut wrenching story to tell.Exposing the wrongs of Shell and how corruption hurt an entire community, this book is eye opening. The Wiwa family and many others faced terrible injustices that should be remembered and not repeated

I read this book with great interest. It is well researched, articulate, unbiased and also, for me sad.I sensed no bias in this work. Given the volatility of the issue, I consider this quite an achievement.I have always believed as the author so eloquently shared, that the miracle of focusing on Jesus in the midst of confusion and uncertainty affords clarity.If Methodists embrace this scholarly, reasoned, unbiased and exquisitely crafted work, there is hope for the denomination; though, allow me to be clear, the reader will have to arrive at his or her conclusions. Dr. McConkey is a master of deciphering a problem, revealing the ethical and theologic tensions of the dilemma, all the while arming the reader with tools to reason with and ponder the arguments.On a personal note, I wish the best for the "United" Methodist Church. In my opinion, the stakes could not be higher; the message of salvation and a clear vision associated with it that helps those emerging as men and women - that they might see their beauty rather than the kind of unholy judgment that leads a shocking number of those struggling with their sexuality to suicide and/or the loss of faith.Having said this, you'll not find Dr. McConkey lured into conclusions on one side or the other. We must all consider the dilemma in contemplation and prayer.Thank you for reminding me of Ingrid's exhortation to keep our eyes on Jesus. She would be very proud of your work in this area, Dale.

My congregation has a bible study currently in place on this topic and I found the 18-year-old text we used to be out of date and not reflective of the current issues facing the UMC with the pending special conference in Feb 2019. This popped up in my social media feed and I picked it up on impulse. It is a concise, thoughtful, and measured look at the many sides in this divisive issue of human sexuality and the church.I highly recommend this to anyone with questions about what faces the United Methodist Church in the coming year. It doesn't take sides. It merely presents the viewpoints of traditionalists, centrists, and progressives in light of the four parts of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral.

This book did a good job explaining the various factors and positions of Progressives, Centrists, and Traditionalists in the current discussion of the role of homosexuality in the UMC. Although it fairly presented all sides it did not make any recommendations which was good. On the other hand it did not address the fact that the various factions have boxed themselves into theologically opposed positions such that schism within the church may be the only option. Without compromise no Way Forward may be found. This book did not offer any plan for compromise, but it didn’t have to; it is a sociological study of the schism.

Dale has done an admirable job of presenting this important and potentially dividing issue in the UMC. Very informative and balanced. Very good description of the three plans to be presented. This is a matter of personal conscience and deeply held beliefs on both sides of the issue. Praying constantly for our church.On a personal note, I smiled at your Ingrid stories. I miss her smile, her kindness and her hugs.God be with each of us in this and in every aspect of our lives.

This is a thoughtful, informative book that offers the reader facts and history on a most important topic. Though written about a divide within the United Methodist Church, the book's topic can be applied to all of us as we all NEED to address this issue and try to come to some important compromises. This can only help to heal the divide.

Dale has written a comprehensive study of our UMC history regarding human sexuality. I've purchased a copies to circulate among church members to explain clearly where our denomination has come from, where we are now and the possibilities for our future. It is truly an unbiased study that helps everyone understand positions that are different than their own. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a clear idea of the UMC process for addressing our current situation.

This is a very balanced and clear description of the issues affecting the United Methodist Church. Recommended reading for any Methodist.

The "introduction" to C++ is done in stages as each basic feature of the language becomes relevant for numerically intensive computation. But the explanations are very brief -- accurate but with limited explanation. These ares of the book might be best for someone who knows C++ basics or is using a companion text for learning C++. The application of C++ to useful computational issues and algorithms is excellent - starting with simple examples and building logically to more complex methods and issues. The exercises are useful. Even simple problems are not that simple and very illustrative when the user gets the exercise "solved" with a working program. The C++ programming style is acceptable and clear but sparse rather than elegant. I think that instructors who teach C++ would want some style changes in the code and more annotation. However I don't think those improvements are necessary for the issues and methods being explained by the author. The book seems to be what it says it is -- a very good introduction to numeric programming using C++. The author says that using C++ may be clumsy at first, but pays off handsomely in the long term. You will eventually gain efficiency in coding and speed of execution that surpasses other programming languages. There are some approaches to complex problems that you can use with an OOP language that would be much more tedious in older languages like FORTRAN, Algol, C or PL-1 (which I used years ago). A prime example is that a method for computing a solution using integers can be "inherited" by a method for real numbers, extra precision computation, complex numbers, etc. Each "new" method requires only modest additoins/changes from the "parent" method instead of a whole new "subroutine" with all the equations done again from scratch. So far (about the first 25% of the book), it looks like he is right..

If studying computational engineering, this book is a nice addition to one of the standard Deitel texts or similar. It maybe isn't quite as comprehensive on all C++ features as a 2000 page text, but it offers nice insights/ examples from a more engineering-oriented perspective. I read both and get a lot out of the combination of the two.One issue is that the accompanying code could be more well put-together. Some of the code in the book is not provided online and overall it would be nice to be able to quickly run the code shown in the book without having to type it all up and write your own dependent header files and such. This book might also be out of date with the 2011 C++ standard, which may or may not be an issue to some people.

If you are already a c++ expert and only looking for knowledge about numeric computing, this book is not for you because 80% of the book is about c++ rather than numeric computing. However, if you want to learn c++, you picked an excellent one for that matter. The author did a very good job to introduce c++ step by step. Every example is precise and right to the point. There is no garbage but full of useful information. That's why although the book is not big, the contents of the book covers almost all the important c++ features.While I still believe c++ Primer and The c++ Programming Language are the best c++ book for reference, I would rate this one as the best c++ introduction book.

There is widespread agreement that Kernighan & Richie's introduction to C is one of the best books on any programming language ever written. Sadly, no book on C++ has achieved this distinction. The complexity of the language is mostly to blame. Personally, I am averse to any 1000-page "primer" that aims to explain C++ from scratch up to intermediate level, with plenty of diversions, illustrations of secondary language features and a menagerie of typographic symbols, all the same getting to discuss classes at page 500. Those are better thought of as bloated references. Instead, C++ a third language, and C a second if only because a) C is not for absolute beginners and b) C programming style is often found in C++ legacy code. But if this is the case, the reader can read and understand succinct explanations of the new features of C++, and be quickly reminded of its similarities with C, or warned of the differences.If you agree with my own preferences, this book is for you. It goes to the point and follows a linear, focused thread. Knowledge of C is not strictly required, but I can't see how can you accept double pointers as your personal saviours if you haven't seen them before. It's rather complete, but not all-encompassing. Topics are discussed clearly and the organizing principles are emphasized first, with the inevitable exceptions coming later. Examples are many. They are sometime thought in C but written in C++, which is no mortal sin. Because of the plain, assured style, and the approach to its subjects, the book reminds me of K&R. Not a small compliment to pay.The book also offers advice on programming style, mostly with an eye on numerical computing. It can be used a very high-level reference, to be complemented by a comprehensive one (my favorite is C++ in a nutshell). And each advanced subject of C++ deserves its own book, especially templates and metaprogramming. Avoid the "primers".Summing up, this is not a book for complete beginners, but more a textbook for a course or self-instruction. It's by no means a first and last book on C++. Such book has not been written yet. Know your needs and what you get.

I was required to read this book for a class, and am quite glad I did read it. It proviedes a very good introduction to C++ for those who aren't familiar with it. Even more importantly, however, are the great examples of how to use C++ for Numerical Methods, which makes it a good book for more experienced programmers as well.
